Not to be confused with "trainer", "pro", or "coach". A professional tennis player may have a coach, a trainer and a "hitting partner" help him in his efforts to win tournaments and prize money. The term "sparring partner", borrowed from boxing, is sometimes used colloquially as a synonym for "hitting partner". A colloquial term often used as a synonym: (tennis) buddy. 3, record 1, English, - practice%20partner

A variation of basic pocket billiards played in championship competition. This game differs from basic pocket billiards chiefly in 2 respects. First, the player is required to designate both the ball he intends to pocket and the pocket. Failure to make the called shot is a miss and ends his inning. Second, once 14 balls have been pocketed, they are racked again. The player continues play by pocketing the 15th ball and caroming the cue ball into the racked balls or by driving a called ball from the racked balls into a pocket. Each time 14 balls have been pocketed, they are reracked and play continues to the end of the game. The number of points set for a game is usually 125 or 150. 1, record 3, English, - 14%2E1%20continuous

poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. 3, record 6, English, - poach
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 2 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one’s partner’s side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms: crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 3, record 6, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate... The poaching shot is usually down the sidelines, wide of the opposing net guard. 2, record 6, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. 5, record 7, English, - rally
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Slight nuance between the English terms "rally" and "exchange". In a "rally", the ball must bounce; the term implies an "exchange" of groundstrokes. One can have an "exchange" of any type of shot, for instance, an exchange of volleys, where the ball never touches the ground. Moreover an "exchange" takes place between points; whereas a "rally" can take place between players simply wanting to hit a few balls without keeping score. In Spanish the term "intercambio" is generic. Therefore it means either "rally" or "exchange", depending on the context-"un intercambio de voleas de cerca, un intercambio de golpes de revés". Furthermore, one can use the term "exchange" in English when referring specifically to the length of a rally, i. e. the number of consecutive balls that pass over the net, as in the phrase "At Wimbledon, there were nary an exchange that exceeded 4 shots". 3, record 7, English, - rally

This method is more economical and admits of better control of the abrasive than is possible using air jets. It usually happens around mile 20, give or take a couple of miles. Your pace slows, sometimes considerably. Some runners say that it feels as though their legs had been filled with lead quail shot... Others can’t feel their feet at all. Thought processes become a little fuzzy... Muscle coordination goes out the window, and self-doubt casts a deep shadow over the soul.... Even if you’re racing at a reasonable pace and you’ve done a good job of carboloading in the days before the marathon, you still have only about 2, 000 calories worth of glycogen stored in the muscles and liver; that's about enough to get you to-surprise!-mile 20. MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...) 1, record 24, English, - God%20gun

2, record 28, French, - d%C3%A9border
