A cutback is a surfing maneuver with which you change your direction on the rail by going back to the breaking part of the wave. See, when you’re at full speed, there's a big chance that you’re getting away from the breaking wave and heading towards the flat spots of the shoulder that don’t have the intrinsic power to carry you. So, you’ll lose speed, and you’ll need to get back to the wave to gain as much speed as you can. That's when you should perform a cutback. In that sense, a cutback isn’t only an aesthetic move, as it gets you back to the power source of the wave : its curl. 2, record 2, English, - cutback

... the big bang does not fit all astronomers’ observations. The distribution of matter across space is too uniform to have come from the Big Bang as originally conceived. So in the 1970s, cosmologists postulated a sudden enlargement of the universe, called inflation, that occurred in the first minuscule fraction of a second after the Big Bang... Only inflation can amplify the primordial gravitational wave signal enough to make it detectable. Satellite altimeters have been providing continuous global measurements of sea level, ocean wind speeds and wave heights for over 25 years, and provide a key contribution for monitoring climate change. However, there is a difficulty in retrieving accurate measurements close to the coast. An innovative processing technique has been developed in the UK [United Kingdom] to retrieve this data, and is applied, in this project, to data from the Jason1 series of altimeter satellites for the Mozambique, Madagascar and South Africa coastal regions. The "coastal altimeter data" generated will be delivered through a web-based portal, and the project team will support local partners in using the data... 2, record 8, English, - coastal%20altimeter%20data

In the applications of the secondary explosive one always requires the use of a detonator and in some cases also a booster in order that detonation may be produced easily and reliably. A booster is usually a small, pressed, cast, or low density(loose-packed) charge of one of the more sensitive secondary explosives capable of being detonated readily by a detonator. It is used to reinforce the detonation wave from the detonator and thus deliver to the secondary explosive a more powerful detonation wave than is possible with a detonator alone. This makes possible the use of many relatively insensitive explosives that otherwise would have no direct application. 2, record 11, English, - booster

Electromagnetic radiation passes through the first half-silvered mirror(left-hand side). The radiation can then either be transmitted through or reflected by the second mirror. If the radiation is reflected, more electron-hole pairs are stimulated to emit radiation. Subatomic particles have various properties and are affected by certain forces that exhibit symmetry. An important property that gives rise to a conservation law is parity. In quantum mechanics all elementary particles and atoms may be described in terms of a wave equation. If this wave equation remains identical after simultaneous reflection of all spatial coordinates of the particle through the origin of the coordinate system, then it is said to have even parity. If such simultaneous reflection results in a wave equation that differs from the original wave equation only in sign, then the particle is said to have odd parity. The overall parity of a collection of particles, such as a molecule, is found to be unchanged with time during physical processes and reactions; this fact is expressed as the law of conservation of parity. 2, record 21, English, - law%20of%20conservation%20of%20parity

An analytical solution is one that can be explicitly written down, also called a closed form solution. Analytical solutions can not be found for many partial differential and ordinary differential equations(most in fact). In the case when an analytical solution has not been found yet, numerical methods may be applied to get an approximate solution. For instance a well known equation with an analytical solution is the wave equation. On the other hand, a well known equation that doesn’t have an analytical solution is the Navier-Stokes equation. 3, record 22, English, - analytical%20solution

Various methods have been proposed to implement a digital-to-analog converter(DAC). One such method is to create a pulse train whose average value is equal to the magnitude of the digital input and then average the pulse train by passing it through a low-pass filter. Conventionally, pulse wave modulators(PWM) are used to create the pulse train from a digital input signal. However, the quality of the analog signal that results from the filtered pulse train may contain considerable noise unless an expensive low-pass filter is constructed. 1, record 29, English, - pulse%20wave%20modulator

Multi-scale composite models based on the Bragg theory are widely used to study the normalized radar cross-section(NRCS) over the sea surface. However, these models are not able to reproduce correctly the NRCS in all configurations and wind-wave conditions. We have developed a physical model that takes into account, not only the Bragg mechanism, but also the non-Bragg scattering mechanism associated with wave breaking.... Models of the normalized radar cross-section of the sea-surface(NRCS) at intermediate incidence angles are usually treated as a composite models describing the combined effects of Bragg scattering mechanism(effective for surface ocean waves whose wavelengths are of the order of the electromagnetic wave) and local-titling effects due to longer underlying waves(Plant, 1986, Donelan and Pierson, 1987, Romeiser et al., 1994, Romeiser et Alpers, 1997, Janssen et al., 1998). 3, record 34, English, - Bragg%20scattering%20mechanism

... Charnock's formula for the atmospheric side makes physically much more sense than for the ocean side. For the atmosphere, one can imagine a wind blowing over roughness elements somehow related to the wave height. This is not quite correct, because waves are constantly moving and changing their shape, but it yields reasonable results. For the ocean side, however, you have breaking waves injecting turbulence into the ocean. So the length-scale of turbulence near the surface is more likely connected to the turbulence spectrum caused by the breaking events, rather than to the wave height. This implies that Charnock's formula lacks a clear physical interpretation. People use it mainly for the lack of better models. 1, record 37, English, - Charnock%27s%20formula

DOUGLAS, Douglas Sea State. Douglas Sea Scale. Douglas Scale. Douglas Swell Scale. Douglas Sea and Swell Scale.... what do they mean? Douglas is the name given to a set of tables used to describe sea and swell conditions. The Douglas Sea tables refer to the waves generated by the wind in the locality at the time, the Douglas Swell tables refer to decaying waves originally generated by distant winds, and the Douglas Sea and Swell tables are a combination of the two. Originally, Douglas made no mention of heights or wave periods, and used only words to define the sea and swell conditions, e. g., slight sea, moderate sea or long low swell, short moderate swell. The combined definition was produced by a sea description followed by a swell description. But different publications have interpreted the Douglas Scales to produce wave heights and periods; and different interpretations have led to confusion. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, there is no internationally recognised definition or official status for any of the Douglas scales. 2, record 38, English, - Douglas%20scale

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it's duration and fetch.... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars(lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot's law states :"If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left. "From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 46, English, - wave%20generation%20area

Seam Testing Methods... There are number of procedures available which have applicability on different geomembranes... the ultrasonic impedance plane method works on the principle of acoustic impedance. A continuous wave of 160 to 185 kHz is sent through the seamed liner and a characteristic dot pattern is displayed on a CRT screen. Calibration of the dot pattern is required to signify a good seam; otherwise, it is not. The method has potential for all types of geomembranes but still needs additional development work. 1, record 48, English, - ultrasonic%20impedance%20plane%20method

The Detonation Pressure is a measure of the pressure in the detonation wave front. It is a function of the(velocity of detonation) and the density of an explosive, and is therefore a very important property, especially in hard rock. At the point where the detonation wave has just completed its passage through the column of explosive and the gases have expanded to fill the borehole and are available to commence their work, the borehole pressure is at its peak value. 2, record 58, English, - detonation%20pressure

2, record 58, French, - pression%20de%20d%C3%A9tonation
