Statistical procedures are called robust if they remain informative and efficient in the presence of outliers and other departures from typical model assumptions on the data. Ignoring unusual observations can play havoc with standard statistical methods and can also result in losing the valuable information gotten from unusual data points. Assume that A was seized of the fee simple estate in Blackacre, and that A's heir, C, was an infant aged ten years. At common law, upon the death of A, the fee simple estate would pass, by inheritance, to C. As C was an infant, the land would go into wardship and with the land also would go the child. Blackacre would become subject to the onerous feudal incidents of wardship and marriage and, as a result, financial havoc could be wrought upon A's family. To avoid this result, A would make the following disposition of Blackacre by way of a use : A would be the "feoffor to uses", B the "feoffee to uses", and C the "cestui que use". B would undertake to hold the fee simple estate to the use of A until his death and, thereafter, to the use of C, A's heir. 2, record 2, English, - feoffor%20to%20uses

The second scourge of the weather is hail. This has, it is true, a more localised effect but the havoc that it brings is considerable in the small area that it sweeps. The grapes which have been split by hailstones lose their juice which in turn causes rot to set in, which lowers the quality of the already greatly reduced harvest. Certain vineyard areas have installed anti-hail guns but it must be admitted that their success is far from complete. 1, record 5, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun

Frost is a risk well known to local orchardists, but the sudden hail storms which occur regularly between September and January constitute a particularly selective threat to the young fruit crop. ... alternative means were sought to combat hail. One such device was the ’hail gun’, originating in France and first introduced into an Ardmona orchard in time for the 1986-7 season. Certainly not a recent invention and lacking scientific support for its efficacy, the hail gun has gained a strong following among orchardists. Costing about $30,000 each, hail guns are electronically operated and powered by exploding acetylene; the benefits were demonstrated, to the satisfaction of some, during a damaging storm in 1987. Their precise mode of action remains uncertain. 3, record 5, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun
