Tropical cyclones are experienced in several areas of the world. In general, they form over the tropical oceans(except the South Atlantic and the eastern South Pacific) and affect the eastern and equatorward portions of the continents. They occur in the tropical North Atlantic(including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico), the North Pacific off the west coast of Mexico and occasionally as far west as Hawaii, the western North Pacific(including the Philippine Islands and the China Sea), the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the southern Indian Ocean off the coasts of Madagascar and the northwest coast of Australia, and the South Pacific Ocean from the east coast of Australia to about 140°W. 6, record 7, English, - tropical%20cyclone

By international agreement, tropical cyclones have been classified according to their intensity as follows: 1) tropical depression, with winds up to 17 m s-1(34 knots); 2) tropical storm, with winds of 18-32 m s-1(35-64 knots); and 3) severe tropical cyclone, hurricane or typhoon, with winds of 33 m-1(65 knots) or higher. It should be noted that the wind speeds referred to above are 10-min average wind speeds at standard anemometer level (10 m), except that in the United States, 1-min average wind speeds are used. 6, record 7, English, - tropical%20cyclone

An important city or the airport of such a city that handles an average of 200 arrivals and departures a day for a given airline. 3, record 13, English, - hub
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Airlines concentrate their activities on one or several hubs by drawing passengers in from smaller centres by way of narrow-bodied aircraft and having them all merge onto larger-capacity aircraft serving major trunk routes, thereby maximizing passenger loads and offering more on-line connections to more places than would be possible with non-stop point-to-point service. 3, record 13, English, - hub
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Since the term "hub" tends to be overused in commercial aviation by airlines eager to promote their services in a highly competitive market, confusion may reign when this term is improperly used as a synonym for "gateway. "Before the "hub-and-spoke" system was conceived by airline economists, the term "gateway" was the only term used to signify a destination from which travel itineraries could either start or end. Strictly speaking, a gateway is a large city with a major airport servicing many international centres. For example, Delta Air Lines considers Honolulu a gateway because of its frequent, daily wide-bodied service into and out of the city. These flights may eventually connect with flights offered by associated or affiliated airlines. However, since Delta does not have authority to fly beyond Hawaii, it cannot consider Honolulu a hub airport, since the concept of a hub implies traffic towards as well as beyond a major centre. 3, record 13, English, - hub

Caldera formation. - A collapse is triggered by the emptying of the magma chamber beneath the volcano, usually as the result of a large volcanic eruption. If enough magma is erupted, the emptied chamber will not be able to support the weight of the volcanic edifice (the mountain) above. Fractures will form around the edge of the chamber, usually in a roughly circular shape. These ring fractures may in fact serve as volcanic vents. As the magma chamber empties, the center of the volcano within the ring fractures begins to collapse. The collapse may occur as the result of a single massive eruption, or it may occur in stages as the result of a series of eruptions. The total area that collapses may be hundreds or thousands of square kilometers. 2, record 33, English, - caldera%20formation

Calderas can become filled with pyroclastic material and even lava. In fact, it has been suggested that caldera formation is a regular process in the growth of basalt volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii. Thus, you would have a large eruption, followed by caldera formation; the caldera is then filled over hundreds or thousands of years, built up, and then a new one is formed at a later date. 3, record 33, English, - caldera%20formation

Volcanic craters are formed either by explosion or collapse.... Collapse craters are formed when the pressure of the molten rock, or magma, inside a volcano can no longer support the weight of the rock or lava above it. This may happen after most of the magma has been drained away during an eruption of the volcano. The material that is no longer supported collapses into the space previously occupied by the magma, thus forming a crater. Well-known examples of collapse craters are found on the summit of Mauna Loa in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 4, record 37, English, - collapse%20crater

Naturally emitted microwaves are the target of this unusual telescope. Located near the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the JCMT [James Clerk Maxwell Telescope] is helping to open a new window on the universe. Named after the pioneering Scottish physicist who gave us a fundamental understanding of electricity and magnetism, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope is used to investigate a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is only now beginning to be explored. The telescope is capable of exploring radio waves with a range of about 0. 3 to 2 mm... JCMT was built jointly by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and is funded by the UK, Canada and the Netherlands. It is operated from the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo, Hawaii and used by astronomers from the funding countries and world-wide, who visit the observatory for the few days that they are scheduled to use the telescope each year. 1, record 54, English, - James%20Clerk%20Maxwell%20Telescope

The Strengthening Families Program(SFP) is a family skills training program designed to reduce risk factors for substance use and other problem behaviors in high-risk children of substance abusers including behavioral problems, emotional, academic and social problems. SFP builds on protective factors by improving family relationships, parenting skills, and improving the youth's social and life skills. It is designed for families with children ages 6 to 10 and has been modified for African-American families, Asian/Pacific Islanders in Utah and Hawaii, rural families, early teens in the Midwest, and Hispanic families. Although originally developed for children of high-risk substance abusers, SFP is widely used for non-substance abusing parents. 1, record 57, English, - Strengthening%20Families%20Program
