Toujours associés à une profonde dépression, les cyclones tropicaux sont accompagnés de vents violents dépassant généralement 100 kilomètres à l'heure et de pluies diluviennes pouvant dépasser 300 millimètres en 24 heures. Caldera formation. - A collapse is triggered by the emptying of the magma chamber beneath the volcano, usually as the result of a large volcanic eruption. If enough magma is erupted, the emptied chamber will not be able to support the weight of the volcanic edifice (the mountain) above. Fractures will form around the edge of the chamber, usually in a roughly circular shape. These ring fractures may in fact serve as volcanic vents. As the magma chamber empties, the center of the volcano within the ring fractures begins to collapse. The collapse may occur as the result of a single massive eruption, or it may occur in stages as the result of a series of eruptions. The total area that collapses may be hundreds or thousands of square kilometers.

Calderas can become filled with pyroclastic material and even lava. In fact, it has been suggested that caldera formation is a regular process in the growth of basalt volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii. Thus, you would have a large eruption, followed by caldera formation; the caldera is then filled over hundreds or thousands of years, built up, and then a new one is formed at a later date.

Volcanic craters are formed either by explosion or collapse.... Collapse craters are formed when the pressure of the molten rock, or magma, inside a volcano can no longer support the weight of the rock or lava above it. This may happen after most of the magma has been drained away during an eruption of the volcano. The material that is no longer supported collapses into the space previously occupied by the magma, thus forming a crater. Well-known examples of collapse craters are found on the summit of Mauna Loa in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre(PTWC) in Hawaii has overall responsibility for issuing tsunami advices and warnings to ITSU members. It is operated by the National Weather Service of the USA. JCMT was built jointly by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and is funded by the UK, Canada and the Netherlands. It is operated from the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo, Hawaii and used by astronomers from the funding countries and world-wide, who visit the observatory for the few days that they are scheduled to use the telescope each year.
