Subject field(s)
  • Visual Disorders
DEF

[A form of] allergic conjunctivitis of the immediate type, due to such airborne allergens as pollens, dusts, spores, and animal hair.

CONT

Atopic conjunctivitis. Hay fever conjunctivitis is commonly associated with the nasal symptoms of hay fever and follows the same seasonal pattern. Itching and photophobia may be of such severity that the ocular symptoms are greater than those affecting the upper respiratory tract.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Troubles de la vision
CONT

DEF

A seasonal variety of allergic rhinitis, marked by acute conjunctivitis with lacrimation and itching, swelling of the nasal mucosa, nasal catarrh, sudden attacks of sneezing, and often with asthmatic symptoms.

CONT

If you have hay fever, you might be hard put to follow your doctor's advice to stay indoors, in closed rooms, as much as possible; to wear a pollen mask when you must be outdoors; and, if the problem is seasonal, to go somewhere else for the bad season. Taking a pill is much more convenient.

Subject field(s)
  • Non-Surgical Treatment
  • Immunology
CONT

The form of treatment known as immunotherapy is also called desensitization, hyposensitization, or allergy shots. Immunotherapy is used in the treatment of allergic patients with respiratory symptoms, mainly of hay fever or asthma. In this form of treatment, injections of allergenic extract are given in gradually increasing amounts of allergenic extract over a period of months. The goal is to induce a degree of tolerance to the allergens and to bring about a decline in the symptoms and the medication requirements.

Key term(s)
  • immune based therapy

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitements non chirurgicaux
  • Immunologie
CONT

Every August, in certain temperate parts of North America, the ragweed plant inaugurates another season of human misery. ... A square-mile field of ragweed plants can yield sixteen tons of pollen in a year, yet only a millionth of a gram can start an allergic response of the kind that can send many of us into fits of sneezing, scratching, coughing and wheezing. Relief does not come until a few weeks before the first hard frost, when the ragweed finally withers.
