HAY MEADOW [5 records]

Record 1 2022-10-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Feed (Agric.)
  • Forage Crops
DEF

Hay made from permanent and usually natural grasslands.

CONT

Two types of hay are generally available to the horse owner : Seeds hay – cut from specially sown grass leys.... Meadow hay – cut from permanent pasture. This [hay] will contain whatever was growing at the time, often a wide variety of grasses and broad-leaved plants, some of which may be toxic. Opinion varies as to which is better for horses, but meadow hay has more variety and if hay forms the main bulk of an animal' s diet throughout the winter it is more likely to fulfil nutritional requirements than hay made from a single grass species.

Subject field(s)
  • Physical Geography
  • Animal Feed (Agric.)
CONT

... across the prairie provinces, reserves were often allocated on the basis of 640 acres (one section or one square mile) per family of five. Areas of hay marsh were often included in the reserve parcel but were not counted against the per‑family (or per capita) allocation, such that only arable lands were used to calculate the allocation.

OBS

Marsh was used most frequently on township plans to describe "soft, wet land typically covered partially or wholly with water" … Examples of other words labeling wet land included muskeg, bog, slough, swale, hay marsh, bottomland or meadow. … The phrase "hay marsh" describing regions suitable to produce hay for livestock was commonly found written on original township plans.

Subject field(s)
  • Forage Crops
CONT

Meadow mixtures. Unless hay is grown for a market that demands unmixed hay of a particular variety, it will be found more profitable to sow mixtures of several grasses and clovers than to sow only one kind. The reasons often assigned for this are as follows :(1) the roots of different plants occupy different portions of the soil;(2) mixed hays supply a variety of feed and usually give a better-balanced ration than a single kind;(3) most fields are uneven in productivity and other soil conditions, and no one plant is particularly adapted to all the conditions that usually exist in a field;...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Culture des plantes fourragères
CONT
