Record 1 2001-06-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Radiation Protection
CONT

A strategy and development program has been outlined by CRNL centered on waste processing for stability and volume reduction, categorization of the wastes as to their hazardous lifetime, and three grades of disposal facilities matched to the needs of durability, containment performance, and intrusion resistance.

Key term(s)
  • isolation performance

French

Domaine(s)
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Radioprotection

Record 2 1996-03-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

A strategy and development program has been outlined by CRNL centered on waste processing for stability and volume reduction, categorization of the wastes as to their hazardous lifetime, and three grades of disposal facilities matched to the needs of durability, containment performance, and intrusion resistance.

OBS

One must distinguish between "disposal" and "storage", although they are often used interchangeably. The former normally refers to permanent storage.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
OBS

Le terme «évacuation» désigne en principe le stockage permanent. Voir cette fiche dans TERMIUM.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
DEF

The act of putting wastes into different categories according to their hazardous lifetime.

CONT

A strategy and development program has been outlined by CRNL centered on waste processing for stability and volume reduction, categorization of the wastes as to their hazardous lifetime, and three grades of disposal facilities matched to the needs of durability, containment performance, and intrusion resistance.

OBS

"categorization": the act of categorizing or the state of being categorized; classification. - "categorize, to": to put into a category or class: classify.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
OBS

Closure of disposal units should be aimed at stability and permanence of the protection over a period at least as long as the hazardous lifetime of the waste.

Record 5 1993-09-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

Three categories of LLW were defined on the basis of hazardous lifetime to match the expected durability and level of isolation provided by each of the concepts. The categories chosen were 0 to 150 years, 150 to 500 years, and greater than 500 years. Since the large majority of the LLW managed at CRNL is expected to have a hazardous lifetime less than 500 years, it was decided to develop first the concepts fitting the shorter two categories. These were identified as the improved sand trench(IST), and the intrusion-resistant shallow land burial(SLB).
