CONT

Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is an ultrahigh-strength cementitious composite with advanced mechanical properties, superior physical characteristics and unprecedented ductility and extremely low permeability. It is composed of customary concrete components, which are selected for specific chemistry, particle size and hydraulic activity. RPC material can be mixed and placed under normal construction conditions and engineered to address specific casting requirements.

RPC was first developed in the early 1990's by researchers at the laboratory of HDR's former parent company, Bouygues S. A., Paris, France. Pierre Claude Aitcin, Scientific Director of Concrete Canada at the University of Sherbrooke, was instrumental in moving RPC from the lab to the field with the application of RPC on the Sherbrooke Pedestrian/Bikeway Bridge in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Bouygues was the lead designer on this project and HDR provided design consulting services.

Tous les constituants d'un BPR sont d'une granulométrie très fine (inférieure à 300 micromètres). Ce sont des sables, du ciment, des fumées de silice, du quartz broyé, l'ensemble étant malaxé avec le minimum d'eau grâce à l'adjonction de fluidifiants. Le BPR contient aussi des microfibres d'acier qui améliorent sa résistance en traction et sa ductilité. La résistance à la compression atteint 200 MPa, soit sept fois plus que pour un béton ordinaire. Après étuvage, elle atteint même 800 MPa.

[...] La ville d'Alexandrie a accordé, sous la forme d'une concession de 99 ans, un espace dans l'eau, de 500 mètres qui devra être remblayé, à proximité du port-est de la ville, près de la corniche. «Il s'agira d'une structure en béton à poudre réactive, un nouveau procédé de la société française de bâtiment et travaux publics Bouygues, deux fois plus résistant que le béton normal et le tout sera recouvert de verre, ce qui donnera à l'ouvrage la forme d'un miroir la journée et d'une aiguille de lumière la nuit tombée», a expliqué le concepteur du projet, Jacques Darolles, directeur du Centre national des Arts et Technologies de Reims (CNATR).
