In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 1, English, - after%20capstan

A Soltau Model RVS 250-AS-STS microtunneling machine with a slurry spoil removal system was selected on a lease arrangement to install the 24-in. sewer line. A mixed face cutting head configuration was selected in anticipation of the varying ground conditions. The unit is supplied with high pressure water jets which have proven effective in boring through dense clays. The RVS 250-AS-STS involves two new innovations. First, it utilizes a state-of-the-art laser guidance system coupled with a completely digital operator control panel with continuous, up-to-date information on the tunneling process. A data logger, which can record data at specific time intervals or length of pipe jacked, also provides for a permanent record of the operation. 1, record 16, English, - microtunneling%20machine

The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line. 2, record 29, English, - fire%20control%20handle

The type of material to be excavated determines whether a cutter head will be required on the end of the suction line. A cutter head is used when material has to be loosened and cut up into small enough pieces to get into the suction line and flow through the pipes to discharge. 2, record 35, English, - bucket%2Dwheel%20dredge

Tri-Plane Roatations: This exercise involves building a tri-plane. Student is pilot, Instructor A second, Instructor B third. Student leans forward in his harness and applies brakes to float up, creating a two stack with a third canopy planed (called a "One-Two") formation. He then releases his foot grips and roatates up, back and over the top of the biplane, and uses risers to get his canopy level with the shoulders of Instructor B. He then docks on Instructor B, and applies brakes to plane cleanly. Emphasis is placed on smooth and timely transition from plane to stack, and risering to shoulder level as described. 2, record 36, English, - plane%20configuration

British Gas and Tracto-Technik jointly developed the technology called pipe bursting, which "allows the replacement of cast iron, clay, cement, and other fracturable pipes with a new main of the same or larger size for water, sewer, or production lines. "... Pipe bursting involves digging an entry pit at one end of the failed pipe and running a pneumatic pipe-bursting tool and an expander into the pipe through the pit opening. The pipe-bursting tool is a soil displacement hammer fitted with cutting blades. A steel line, attached to the head of the tool and to a winch on the other end of the pipe, keeps the line tight and helps guide the tools. As the pipe burster hammers through old pipe, the expander moves broken fragments and dirt out of the way to make room for new pipe, which is attached to the back of the tool and follows it into the void.

4, record 40, French, - %C3%A9clatement

An injection port is necessary in all g. c. [gas chromatography] and h. p. l. c. [high-performance liquid chromatography] systems in which syringe injection is employed. The injection port joins the top of the column to the mobile phase supply line, and has a third outlet through a small orifice covered by a self-sealing septum. Injection of samples is done by inserting the hypodermic syringe containing the sample through this septum so that the point of the needle is immediately above the head of the column. 4, record 56, French, - chambre%20d%27injection

A line bisecting the proximal radial shaft, normally passing through the capitellum on every radiographic view irrespective of the position in which it is obtained. If the line fails to pass through the capitellum, dislocation of the radial head or displacement of the capitellum is indicated. This is of particular value in recognizing the dislocation component of a Monteggia's fracture. [From RSKEL, 1982, p. 439. ] 2, record 74, English, - radiocapitellar%20line

Ischemic necrosis of the femoral capital epiphysis is characterized initially by dense areas appearing in the femoral head. These areas may take the form of a bandlike linear opacity along the articular surface, or may follow the epiphyseal line. Widening of the epiphyseal cartilage plate may then occur. Spherical segmental opacities then appear, giving the so-called "snow-cap" appearance. [From GBONE, 1980, p. 184. ] 3, record 76, English, - snowcap%20appearance

Catterall attempted to improve the predictive value of early radiographic changes in Perthes disease by identifying four radiologic signs that indicated a capital femoral epiphysis at risk for collapse. These findings are(1) Gage's sign(a small, osteoporotic segment that forms a transradiant V on the lateral side of the epiphysis) ;(2) calcification lateral to the epiphysis;(3) lateral subluxation of the femoral head; and(4) a transverse epiphyseal line. Murphy and Marsh found that these four head at risk signs and a fifth, diffuse metaphyseal reaction, correlated better with a poor radiologic result than did the degree of epiphyseal involvement. The purpose of this switch is to avoid overflowing the laundry tub when the automatic washer is discharging its water. The switch is installed on the drain line between the laundry tub and laundry pump. Head pressure from the laundry tub activates the switch. Simultaneously a flow of water forming a loop from the pressure side of the pump through the switch bowl and returning to the pump intake keeps the switch contacts closed.(Pump runs continuously). When the laundry tub is completely empty the pump suction line takes in air. This pocket of air travels through the pump and through the return pressure loop. When the air enters the switch bowl, the pressure gives way to the pump suction side, thus pulling the switch contacts open(pump shuts off). 1, record 85, English, - laundry%20pump%20switch

1, record 89, French, - imprimante%20%C3%A0%20jet%20d%27encre%20goutte%20%C3%A0%20la%20demande
