Tetanus(lockjaw) is caused by neurotoxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium tetani, particularly in deep or closed wounds, such as puncture wounds, but may occur, due to intestinal infections. This highly fatal disease is a constant threat for all horses as the bacteria are widely distributed in soil and manure.... Clinical signs of tetanus in affected horses begin following an incubation period of 3 days to several weeks, but usually 1 to 2 weeks. Muscle spasms and stiff paralysis progressing from the head to the neck, front, and then hind legs occurs.... The horse may be unable to swallow, resulting in saliva dripping from the mouth and regurgitation of ingested food and water through the nose. Convulsions, muscle rigidity, sweating, and fever may follow.

Les spasmes commencent généralement au niveau de la tête et du cou (hyperextension de l'encolure, procidence de la 3e paupière, lèvres et nez retroussés), puis évoluent en une raideur généralisée, une incapacité à se nourrir, un décubitus et la mort par arrêt respiratoire.

C'est pourquoi on donne souvent à ces dispositifs le nom anglais de sprinklers et même de Grinnell, quoique les brevets de l'inventeur soient depuis longtemps tombés dans le domaine public.

[Extincteur automatique] Moins fréquent, ce terme semble surtout utilisé au Canada et dans les ouvrages traduits quoique relevé aussi dans DUCON; de plus, il n'est pas toujours possible de juger, en contexte, si on l'utilise au sens d'une «installation de sprinkleurs» ou dans le sens de «tête de sprinkleur». Noter également que tous les extincteurs automatiques ne fonctionnent pas nécessairement à l'eau; on utilise parfois de la mousse, du gaz carbonique ou une poudre spéciale. Lorsque tel est le cas, on qualifie toujours de quel type d'extincteur automatique il s'agit; dans le cas de l'eau, le qualifiant peut être implicite.

Criteria for Brain Death. The criteria for the determination of brain death were developed such that any physician in any milieu could confidently diagnose it. All criteria must be met before a diagnosis of brain death can be made : The patient must be unconscious. The patient must be unable to breathe spontaneously and would therefore be on a ventilator. There must be no response to external stimuli(verbal, pain). There must be no response(eye movement) to passive head movements or to ice water syringed into the ears. One of the most notable characteristics of an estuary is the differing gradients of salinity that are present... These gradients may appear both horizontally and vertically within the water column. Under flood tide conditions the layer of surface water coming into the estuary is moving at a faster rate than the bottom layer. As the tidal waters come in contact with the fresh water moving out of the river, the more dense salt water sinks to the bottom causing the fresh water to rise. The result of this tidal movement is a mixing of the fresh and salt water from the top to the bottom referred to as tidal over-mixing, and a salt water "wedge" being formed. The wedge is narrowest at the head of the river and it broadens out towards the mouth of the river.

A sparge arm is another worthwhile brewery option. Although it does not actually save time, it does decrease the amount of effort you must spend pouring sparge water into the lauter tun. British Gas and Tracto-Technik jointly developed the technology called pipe bursting, which "allows the replacement of cast iron, clay, cement, and other fracturable pipes with a new main of the same or larger size for water, sewer, or production lines. "... Pipe bursting involves digging an entry pit at one end of the failed pipe and running a pneumatic pipe-bursting tool and an expander into the pipe through the pit opening. The pipe-bursting tool is a soil displacement hammer fitted with cutting blades. A steel line, attached to the head of the tool and to a winch on the other end of the pipe, keeps the line tight and helps guide the tools. As the pipe burster hammers through old pipe, the expander moves broken fragments and dirt out of the way to make room for new pipe, which is attached to the back of the tool and follows it into the void. After the new pipe is in place, crews connect service laterals at specified locations.

Le tubage ou l'insertion d'une petite conduite à l'intérieur de l'ancienne, était déjà utilisé depuis un certain temps. Les nouvelles méthodes consistaient: a) en l'utilisation d'une technique d'éclatement pour retirer l'ancienne conduite et la remplacer simultanément avec une nouvelle et b) en la fabrication in situ d'un nouveau revêtement en insérant une gaine imprégnée de résine dans la conduite existante afin de former une nouvelle conduite structurellement indépendante [après séchage].

Parmi les techniques les plus utilisées : l'injection, qui consiste à aller placer sous pression des résines ou des gels sur les défauts ponctuels grâce à un appareillage guidé depuis la surface; le gainage ou chemisage continu, qui permet de reconstituer la paroi interne de la conduite, également à partir de résines; enfin le tubage qui permet d'introduire une conduite de diamètre inférieur dans le tronçon à réhabiliter ou dans une voie libérée après broyage ou éclatement de la conduite défectueuse.
