OBS

"Happy Birthday to You" is an American song which is sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person’s birth. Non-English speakers have translated it into other languages.

OBS

The "Happy Birthday" story begins with two sisters from Kentucky Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill... One day in 1893 Patty... came up with the modest melody we now know as "Happy Birthday"; sister Patty added some simple lyrics and completed the creation of "Good Morning to All" a simple greeting song for teachers to use in welcoming students to class each day... Here the trail becomes murky--nobody really knows who wrote the words to "Happy Birthday to You" and put them to the Hills’ melody or when it happened. The "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics first appeared in a songbook edited by one Robert H. Coleman in March of 1924 where they were published as a second stanza to "Good Morning to You"; with the advent of radio and sound films "Happy Birthday" was widely popularized as a birthday celebration song and its lyrics supplanted the originals... The Chicago-based music publisher Clayton F. Summy Company working with Jessica Hill published and copyrighted "Happy Birthday" in 1935... so under current law the copyright protection of "Happy Birthday" will remain intact until at least 2030.

A law suit.

OBS

Though it may seem unidiomatic to make litigation a count noun(hence a plural), the usage is old and is today common. "E. g. ", "[The] first and second parties now have certain litigations pending in the Mercer Circuit Court. "... "a single automobile litigation... consumed sixty-three trial days". "The firm engages in general civil practice with emphasis on business litigations". "No court in which a litigation to that end might be brought... This word is best not used, however, as an equivalent of action or suit :"Whether such claims are just need not be decided to determine the rights of the parties to this litigation [read suit]". Properly, litigation=the action or process of carrying on a suit in law or equity("OED") ;thus it does not refer to the suit itself, but to the maintenance of it. Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]".

The term "horse vaulting" is a bit misleading. It brings to mind the aerial leaps performed in gymnastic competitions on a padded stationary block. While vaulting does include jumping onto and off of a moving horse, it also involves much more, as I learned on a visit to watch the Great Falls Vaulting Team practice. "Schistes lustrés" are the fine-grained, lustrous, low-grade metamorphic phyllites or schists of the alpine geosyncline. General practice in English is to retain this term which has great specificity.

CONT

These outcrops were once part of the sediment that lay on the floor of the Tethys ocean. Originally they were slightly calcareous and muddy. During metamorphism the clay minerals have been changed to mica, here arranged in dark, elongate clots. The rock is now very shiny-hence it is called informally "schistes lustrés. "

CONT

This study deals with the different components of a part of the Tethyan suture in the north-western French-Italian Alps. It concerns more precisely the lithostratigraphic and structural analysis of the so-called Schistes lustrés complex. ... The Schistes lustrés complex is resolved into three different lithostructural sets of units. The two lower ones, born of the European palaeo-margin for the lowest and of the palaeo-oceanic realm or Tethys for the other, are made of calcschists and marbles labelled by syn-orogenic detrital deposits of composite origin, oceanic and continental.

The lingonberry fruitworm is a small moth whose larvae borrow into and feed on lingonberry fruit. Feeding damage causes berry loss, but most of the problems are caused by the wthitish caterpillars emerging from the fruit after it is picked. This results in reduced marketability. There is increasing interest in domesticated lingonberry cultivars from the US and Europe, and several of these cultivars are now being tested here. To ensure industry growth the fruit must be free of insects and insect damage. With this research goal, the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre tested a monitoring system for the fruitworm using "pheromones".

in statu quo is a latinism properly equivalent to "in statu quo ante"(=in the same condition as previously. Some writers have quite understandably assumed that there was a distinction between "in statu quo" and "in statu quo ante", and have used the former merely to mean "in the status quo"; in the same condition as now exists. Here the phrase is correctly used :"The fact that the parties cannot be put ’in statu quo’ precisely as to the subject matter of the contract will not preclude a decree for rescission"./"Depriving one of the benefit of a contract that he supposes he has made leaves everything ’in statu quo’, rather than imposing a liability to which no limit can be placed". The foregoing discussion is largely beside the point, however, inasmuch as the English renditions of the phrase are preferable to the Latinate.
