The word didactics will be used here to refer to pedagogical activities intended to have a direct effect on the student, as opposed to diagnostic activities. This is the sense in which we have used the adjective "didactic" so far. Note that didactics is usually construed more generally, as "the art or science of teaching", which does not exclude diagnostic activities. Since there does not seem to be an English word for the particular aspect of pedagogy that didactics denotes here, I have taken the liberty of restricting the meaning of the word for the context of this book. 3, record 2, English, - didactics

The intrinsic angular momentum of an elementary particle or nucleus, which exists even when the particle is at rest, as distinguished from orbital angular momentum. 3, record 6, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle.... There is a... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i. e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What's more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2,... or half-integral(1/2, 3/2,...) of a base unit... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron's charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 6, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

[T] here is the common law principle of conventional, consensual, or agreed boundaries. While in a sense all boundaries arise from acceptance or agreement or convention, the expression "conventional boundary" has a special meaning. The concept of a conventional boundary, as between adjoining property owners, rests on the prerequisite that another, the true boundary line of division, cannot be found, that it is uncertain and undeterminable, that it is lost, and not merely that it is unknown because sufficient enquiries have not been made or surveys performed... It would appear that there is no place for the admission of a conventional line where the true line is redeterminable on the evidence or the prescribed rules of the Act.("Survey Law in Canada", 1989, p. 150). 1, record 16, English, - conventional%20boundary

A quantum-mechanical concept directly associated with the Uncertainty Principle, most usually applied in organic chemistry to describe the [pi]-bonding in a conjugated system. This bonding is not localized : instead, each link has a "fractional double bond character" or bond order. There is a corresponding "delocalization energy" identifiable with the stabilization of the system compared with a hypothetical alternative in which formal(localized) single and double bonds are present. Some degree of delocalization is always present, and can be estimated by quantum-mechanical calculations. The effects are particularly evident in aromatic systems and in symmetrical molecular entities in which a lone pair of electrons or a vacant orbital is conjugated with a double bond(e. g. carboxylate ions, nitro compounds, the allyl cation). Delocalization in such species may be represented by partial bonds or as resonance(here symbolized by a two-headed arrow) between contributing structures... 1, record 19, English, - delocalization

1, record 19, French, - d%C3%A9localisation

It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke. 1, record 21, English, - indian%20stroke

If there is a question of a wind instrument in the Sacso project, it is not a matter of music but of flight mechanics and aerodynamics. Sacso designates a very particular model testing mechanism in a wind tunnel, dedicated to predicting the behavior of aircraft in flight. Contrary to the traditional setup where the model is fixed to the wall by some rigid device(sting, mast, or other), here it is suspended and driven in motion in the flow by nine cables, with controlled tension. Recent robotics techniques are used to control the system, namely "hybrid force-position control of parallel redundant kinematics. "This mechanism is currently dimensioned for the low-velocity domain(0-35 m/s) and is installed in Onera's vertical wind tunnel in Lille. 3, record 30, English, - vertical%20wind%20tunnel

It is recognized that there are cases where liquid exchangers are employed and where it may be difficult to distinguish between the separation process as belonging to ion exchange or liquid-liquid distribution, but the broad definition given here is regarded as that which is most appropriate.

5, record 38, French, - %C3%A9changeur%20d%27ions

Breaking takes between 4 and 6 weeks, though longer may be required if horses have had little handling. All horses here basically go through the same breaking program, regardless of their final intended use. Your horse is tied up to the tie-up-poles, where there is minimal risk of injury if he pulls back. In the round-pen, he will be hobbled, bridled, and saddled. He will be lunged with a saddle on, carrying the bit but no reins. Next, he will de driven(long reined). This starts to develop steering on the horse, stopping and backing up. Then he will be ridden in the round-pen until he is balanced with a rider, can steer, stop and back up. Then it is outside to do the same. 1, record 39, English, - breaking

The lingonberry fruitworm is a small moth whose larvae borrow into and feed on lingonberry fruit. Feeding damage causes berry loss, but most of the problems are caused by the wthitish caterpillars emerging from the fruit after it is picked. This results in reduced marketability. There is increasing interest in domesticated lingonberry cultivars from the US and Europe, and several of these cultivars are now being tested here. To ensure industry growth the fruit must be free of insects and insect damage. With this research goal, the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre tested a monitoring system for the fruitworm using "pheromones". 1, record 42, English, - lingonberry%20fruitworm

in statu quo is a latinism properly equivalent to "in statu quo ante"(=in the same condition as previously. Some writers have quite understandably assumed that there was a distinction between "in statu quo" and "in statu quo ante", and have used the former merely to mean "in the status quo"; in the same condition as now exists. Here the phrase is correctly used :"The fact that the parties cannot be put ’in statu quo’ precisely as to the subject matter of the contract will not preclude a decree for rescission"./"Depriving one of the benefit of a contract that he supposes he has made leaves everything ’in statu quo’, rather than imposing a liability to which no limit can be placed". The foregoing discussion is largely beside the point, however, inasmuch as the English renditions of the phrase are preferable to the Latinate. One should write in the status quo(present condition) or "in the status quo ante"(previous condition). 2, record 45, English, - in%20statu%20quo

One of the most profitable and competitive sectors of the paper industry is the "soft" tissue market. Here, the customer pays for bulk and softness, and the producer finds himself in the happy position of being able to charge a higher price for a product which actually contains a lower weight of fiber. Hydrolysis with Hydrogen Chloride Gas.... A variation of the use of concentrated hydrochloric acid combined with hydrogen chloride is the process of Hereng. Here, wood chips are impregnated with 30% hydrochloric acid in a mixer and then transferred by a conveyor into the reactor. Because the chips are not predried, the acid concentration in them is reduced to 20%. The reactor consists of a hexagonal upright vessel equipped with numerous inclined trays. The impregnated wood is moved from the top toward the bottom by means of a vibrator and thus the prehydrolysis is completed after 45 minutes. The acid, containing chiefly pentoses, is filtered off and part of it is returned to the mixer. In this way, the sugar concentration in the prehydrolyzate is increased to about 20% to 25%. In a second step, the material, which has again been mixed with 30% hydrochloric acid, is passed through the reactor and hydrogen chloride gas is injected at the bottom in a countercurrent. In this way, the acid concentration is increased to 40% to 41% or more. The hydrolyzed material is conveyed from the bottom of the reactor to a drying chamber and is dried there with anhydrous hydrogen chloride gas which has previously been passed through a calcium chloride solution. The hydrolyzed material, consisting of lignin and sugar, is extracted with water and the sugar solution is subjected to a posthydrolysis. 1, record 56, English, - Hereng%20process

Methods that use vision to locate a workpiece and the sites on it suitable for gripping have been reported by Birk, Kelley, and Wilson. The proposed three approaches, each of which utilizes two distinct phases called the instruction phase and the execution phase.... An approach called "heuristic acquisition" uses rules based on a priori knowledge of the workpiece and its hold sites. Here, the instruction phase consists of testing different heuristics for acquiring a part, such as "look for the hole that is large enough to insert a finger into" or "find a flat surface large enough to accommodate the cup on a SAVG". During execution, the image of the workpiece is examined to satisfy the heuristics for that part, and the robot proceeds. Since a heuristic does not guarantee that there is a solution, safety mechanisms such as contact sensors must be included to protect both the robot and the part from damage. 1, record 61, English, - heuristic%20acquisition

Universal subgoaling is an especially interesting type of reflective behavior. Although the idea was originally introduced in the context of general problem solving, we can apply it to deduction, as shown here. Consider a reasoning procedure that is undefined for certain steps on certain databases because of difficulties in supplying a satisfactory definition. For example, the procedure may not dictate any further inferences, or there may be too many possibilities. Universal subgoaling is the process of dealing with these undefined cases by reflection. 1, record 63, English, - subgoaling

Transfer of goods at sea likewise forms part of the larger subject of enemy character, for the question here also is whether such a transfer divests these goods of their enemy character, and there was likewise no unanimous practice among the maritime States when the Naval Conference met in London in 1908-1909. British and American practice has always refused to recognise a sale after the outbreak of war of goods in transitu if the vessel was captured before the neutral buyer had actually taken possession of the goods. On the other hand, it seems that French practice used to recognise such a sale in transitu provided it could be proved to have been bona fide. 2, record 68, English, - transfer%20in%20transitu
