HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE [3 records]

Record 1 2011-08-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrochemistry
DEF

Ion-selective electrode formed when an active substance, or mixture of active substances, is mixed with an inert matrix, such as silicone rubber or PVC, or placed on hydrophotized graphite, to form the sensing membrane which is heterogeneous in nature.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électrochimie
DEF

Record 2 2011-05-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
  • Oceanography
DEF

... any area of sea ice(other than fast ice) regardless of its form or disposition, composed of a heterogeneous mixture of ice of varying sizes and ages, and formed by the jamming or crushing together of pieces of floating ice.

OBS

The mass may be either loosely or tightly packed but it covers the sea surface with little or no open water.

OBS

The terms "pack ice" and "ice pack" have been used indiscriminately for both the sea area containing floating ice, and the material itself.

OBS

When concentrations [of sea ice] are ... 7/10 or more, the term "pack ice" is normally used. When concentrations are 6/10 or less the term "drift ice" is normally used.

OBS

pack ice: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Glaciologie
  • Océanographie
DEF

Record 3 1995-01-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

"heterogeneous" :(Latin, "different kinds"). Any mixture or solution comprised of two or more substances, whether or not they are uniformly dispersed. Common examples are such diverse materials as air(a mixture of 1/5th oxygen and 4/5ths nitrogen), milk, marble, paint, gasoline, blood, mayonnaise. In all such cases the mixtures can be separated mechanically into their components. "Homogenized" milk is as heterogeneous as regular milk, and the term is, strictly speaking, a misnomer.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
DEF

Qui est formé de phases différentes.

Spanish

Campo(s) temático(s)
  • Química
DEF
