The House of Commons is the custodian of an important collection of art and artifacts reflecting Canada's social and political history. Many of these works are displayed throughout Parliament, including its committee rooms. This painting, Ghosts of Vimy Ridge, is currently on loan to the new Canadian War Museum, but its permanent home is the Centre Block's historic Railway Committee Room. Portraying the flickering spirits of departed Canadian soldiers making their way toward the summit of the ridge, it was painted in 1929 by Australian artist William Longstaff and purchased by Captain John Dewar, who donated it to Parliament in 1931. 1, record 15, English, - Ghosts%20of%20Vimy%20Ridge

1, record 27, French, - hygrom%C3%A8tre%20d%27Alluard

The Museum is dedicated to preservation of the history of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and honoring those airmen who trained and served, and especially those who died while serving their country in the conflict of 1939-1945. This is the only Museum in Canada dedicated solely to this goal and we think it is fitting that it is located in Manitoba where so much of the training was carried out. 1, record 31, English, - Commonwealth%20Air%20Training%20Plan%20Museum

Commencing in 1974 and produced by the Education and Cultural Affairs Division of the National Museum of Man in conjunction with the relevant research divisions, the Museum Kits were multi-media, thematic, learning packages which were loaned free of charge for two-week intervals to schools community groups, libraries, etc. Each "museum in a box" included artifacts, specimens and related interpretive material such as films, maps, fact sheets, slides and resource books. There were two types of kits-a small kit with limited artifacts and resource materials, usually in separate language versions and the larger, bilingual, more complex kits, with resources inserted according to the requirements of the borrowers. The kits were designed for the 11-14 age group and were to promote an understanding and appreciation for Canada's multicultural heritage as well as the functions and importance of human history museums within Canada. Catalogues of available kits were produced and circulated through the National Programs Division. They have been discontinued. 1, record 33, English, - museum%20in%20a%20box

Exhibition of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. "Inuit living in the western Canadian Arctic call themselves "Inuvialuit", meaning "real human beings", and have long considered themselves distinct from other Canadian Inuit. Today this distinct identity has a political dimension; the Inuvialuit chose not to join Nunavut(the new Inuit territory in the eastern Arctic), but to remain in the Northwest Territories under their own land claim agreement. The exhibition "Inuvialuit" explores the history of this unique Arctic people, from their first arrival in the Canadian Arctic from Alaska about a thousand years ago to the modern era. The exhibition highlights material collected by fur trader Roderick MacFarlane in the 1860s, and the photographic resources of the Anglican Archives, dating from the 1890s.

While the immigrants who came during the first migratory wave(1880 to the late 1920s) have already disappeared, those who arrived during the second wave(1947 to the late 1960s) are an increasingly ageing population. As their numbers gradually decrease in the coming years, the last living witnesses of the multiple peasant cultures from which most Italian-Canadians descended will disappear as well. Exhibition of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. "This exhibition explores a universal subject, covering the history of humanity and a wealth of regions around the world. Signed, Sealed, Delivered will enable visitors to follow the letter in an astonishing trip around the globe, through the ages and in all its possible forms-from authentic clay Mesopotamian tablets, to letters exchanged in wartime, to modern day e-mail. Nine themes will breathe life into the most significant moments and events in the development of the postal system : writing practices, the origins of the post, the colonial era, Canadian postage stamps, transportation, sorting and technology in the transmission of mail, the contents of the mail, mail in wartime and the rural post office.

The pholidosaurid record for size is held by a huge specimen from Africa. P. Taquet of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris has turned up complete skulls and partial skeletons of the species Sarcosuchus imperator in a remarkable Lower Cretaceous fossil locality in the Saharan part of the Republic of Niger. This gavial-like monster was 11 meters long overall, and its narrow skull measures 1. 8 meters. It apparently lived in the rivers of this now-arid region. 1, record 69, English, - Sarcosuchus%20imperator

2, record 69, French, - Sarcosuchus%20imperator
