The oldest use is probably in cricket, where a hat trick is the dismissal by the bowler of 3 batsmen with 3 consecutive balls, for which the bowler apparently received a bonus of new hat. The term is widely used in hockey and soccer to indicate the scoring of 3 goals by one individual in a single game. Originally the hat trick was the scoring of 3 consecutive unanswered goals, but they need not be consecutive or unanswered to qualify as a hat trick today. The term has also been used of a jockey's riding a winner in 3 consecutive races or winners in an annual race for 3 consecutive years. A notable exception to the 3 successive performances which characterize a hat trick in other sports is its occasional use in baseball to mean that a player has hit for the cycle-a single, double, triple, and home run in one game.

To score, you have to reach the fourth post on your own hit. If you stop at a post, you may run home when a teammate hits the ball, but you do not score. You join the end of the batting line. La balle au camp est un jeu anglais. Même si l'on y joue souvent de façon désinvolte avec un petit bâton et une balle, ce jeu comporte des règles bien définies. Chaque équipe de 9 joueurs joue 2 tournées au bâton. Le frappeur se sert d'un bâton de bois qu'on appelle tout simplement un bâtonnet et essaie de marquer des rondes. Le livreur envoie la balle avec un mouvement souple du bras, par en dessous. Il est à 24 1/2 pieds (7,5 mètres) du frappeur. Quatre poteaux mesurant 3 pieds 11 pouces (1,2 mètre) chacun forment les buts. Pour marquer une ronde, le frappeur doit frapper la balle et courir à l'extérieur des poteaux jusqu'au quatrième poteau. Il marque un point seulement s'il atteint le dernier poteau sur son propre lancer. S'il arrête sa course à l'un des poteaux, il peut se rendre au marbre lorsqu'un de ses coéquipiers frappe la balle, Cependant, cela ne vaut pas de points et le joueur prend place à la fin de la formation des frappeurs. Le frappeur peut être éliminé si un joueur de champ attrape la balle ou s'il touche le frappeur ou le poteau avec la balle. La tournée se termine une fois tous les frappeurs retirés.

On dit «marquer une ronde» pour rendre «to score a rounder», et «marquer des rondes» pour rendre «to score rounders».

Touch football derives its name from the fact that touching(tagging) the ballcarrier rather than tackling him is the method used to stop his advancement. This is a passing game rather than a kicking game... variations still exist with respect to number of players [from 6 to 11 players or more], distances to be gained for a first down [local rules may specify 20 yards], total number of downs [on a small field a team may be permitted 5 downs] and length of game [agreed to beforehand by the teams involved].... A ballcarrier is considered downed when he is touched--that is, when one or both hands of the defending player tag him, usually above the waist. Offensive players may run interference for the ballcarrier but may not hit an opponent so as to knock him down.... Padded uniforms, helmets, and cleats are not worn, because the chance of injury is slight.
