The oldest use is probably in cricket, where a hat trick is the dismissal by the bowler of 3 batsmen with 3 consecutive balls, for which the bowler apparently received a bonus of new hat. The term is widely used in hockey and soccer to indicate the scoring of 3 goals by one individual in a single game. Originally the hat trick was the scoring of 3 consecutive unanswered goals, but they need not be consecutive or unanswered to qualify as a hat trick today. The term has also been used of a jockey's riding a winner in 3 consecutive races or winners in an annual race for 3 consecutive years. A notable exception to the 3 successive performances which characterize a hat trick in other sports is its occasional use in baseball to mean that a player has hit for the cycle-a single, double, triple, and home run in one game. 2, record 8, English, - hat%20trick

Jacques Plante, a goaler for the hockey team "Le Canadien de Montréal", is the first hockey player to have worn a mask in the 1960's. The practice became popular to the point that now every goaler wears a complete "mask" while many offensive players wear a "face shield, guard or protector" attached to their helmet, hence the difficulty distinguishing among the different terms. The idea is now accepted by players in many sports : ice, field or roller hockey, short-track speed skating, ringette, etc. The protection worn by the receiver in baseball stands in the same category. 8, record 9, English, - face%20mask

"Another type of insurance is known in the Canadian industry as participant to participant liability. It is almost nonexistent. This type of insurance may be taken out by associations or agencies who want to protect themselves in the eventuality that one participant wants to sue another participant. For example, the hockey league at one time had this type of insurance so that if one player beat up another, the league could handle the suit without causing problems between the two opponents.
