conic projection : A projection based on the principle of a hollow cone placed over a sphere so that when the cone is unrolled the line of tangency becomes the central or standard parallel of the region mapped.

The RD Raindrop nozzle is a type of hollow cone nozzle. It uses a standard disc/core nozzle in combination with a specially designed cap. The spray exiting the standard nozzle enters the Raindrop cap and is decelerated in a secondary swirl chamber. Upon exiting from the Raindrop cap the spray velocity is lower resulting in the formation of large drops.

Admiral Fitzroy's(English) storm signal [1864] consists of a hollow cylinder and cone, either of which, or both simultaneously, may be suspended from a mast or staff so as to be visible to ships in port or in a roadstead. Their positions and grouping denote the probable direction of the wind in an approaching storm. Thus :cone point upward to the right of the staff=northerly gale; cone point downward to the left of the staff=southerly gale; cylinder above=expect dangerous winds from both quarters successively; upright cone above cylinder=Dangerous wind expected from the north; reversed cone below cylinder=dangerous wind expected from the south; and so on.

Signals are hoisted on masts in ports to indicate the approach of a gale and the direction from which it will blow.

A widely used machine as a primary breaker of coal, rock or ore in mines. It consists essentially of a hollow cone-shaped chamber in which an inner solid cone gyrates on an eccentric bearing. It has a reduction ratio of about 6 and breaks down to a size of about 2 in. It is usual to screen out the fine sizes from run-of-mine coal before feeding it to a gyratory breaker.

Venomous cone snails use a highly developed projectile apparatus to deliver their cocktail of toxic conotoxins into their prey. In fish-eating species such as Conus magus the cone detects the presence of the fish using chemosensors in its siphon and when close enough extends its proboscis and fires a hollow harpoon-like tooth containing venom into the fish. This immobilizes the fish and enables the cone snail to wind it into its mouth via an attached filament. The fish is then digested.

Cone nozzle. Liquid is forced through a swirl plate, having one or more tangential or helical slots or holes, into a swirl chamber. An air core is formed as the liquid passes with a high rotational velocity from the swirl chamber through a circular orifice. The thin sheet of liquid emerging from the orifice forms a hollow cone as it moves away from the orifice, owing to the tangential and axial components of velocity. A solid cone pattern can be achieved by passing liquid centrally through the nozzle to fill the air core : this gives a narrower angle of spray and larger droplets.
