... five Italians submitted a design for a pair of reinforced and pre-stressed slim concrete arches, each of 130 foot spans, hinged at the spring lines. They were set delicately between the original 19th-century abutments at the river bank and central pier, as the programme required these remnants to be integrated in the new bridge design.
