Cette époque constitue la majeure partie du Quaternaire. Elle est caractérisée par une succession de glaciations importantes séparées par des épisodes au climat plus chaud.

Le Pléistocène est subdivisé en inférieur, moyen et supérieur. Au Canada, la toute dernière partie du Pléistocène moyen est désignée sous le nom de «Illinoien» ou «Étage illinoien», et le Pléistocène supérieur est divisé en deux étages, le Sangamonien et le Wisconsinien.

Post-glacial: ... refers to an interval of time when all glacial ice disappeared to the present moment. This encompasses about 10,000 years or so but nobody knows when all the ice actually melted.

While the whole of the Holocene was a time of warmth relative to the previous 60-70, 000 years, global climate was far from static during this period. Many warming and cooling episodes occurred on the 100-year timescale. Because these events are only observable through indirect or proxy evidence, which is both local and often poorly dated, we do not know how global mean climate changed.
