The first QWI was organized by a woman named Elizabeth Ann Beach in the Eastern Townships, more specifically in Dunham, Quebec, on January 27, 1911. From there, word spread through the province and many counties formed branches with an average of 30 members or more. For over 40 years researchers and teachers in Home Economics and related disciplines in Canadian Universities have met to share and encourage development in their respective fields. In 1959 the Canadian University Teachers of Home Economics(CUTHE) was formed at the Learned Societies Meeting in Saskatoon. In 1985, this group changed its name to CARHE(Canadian Association for Research in Home Economics) to better reflect the stage of development and research activity of its members and to broaden its mandate and membership.
