Counting coup was a relatively harmless act of bravery and war honor of the highest grade. Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior, with the hand or with a coup stick. The term is of French origin from the noun coup(pronounced/ku/) which means a hit, a blow or a strike. The expression can be seen as referring to "counting strikes". Coups were recorded by notches in the coup stick, or by feathers in the headdress of a warrior who was rewarded with them for an act of bravery.

Dryden, a prominent aeronautical engineer who at the time of his death in 1965 was NASA's deputy administrator. Saint Joseph's Day, commonly called the Feast of St. Joseph or in some churches, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph is marked in some Christian churches in honor of Saint Joseph, spouse of Mary and foster-father of Jesus. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph the patron of the Universal Church, and promoted the "Patronage" feast(later Solemnity, before the Vatican II calendar's use of such term) of Saint Joseph on the third Wednesday after Easter; this was replaced in 1955 by the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. As Joseph was a carpenter(or a builder), he is also the patron saint of workers.

Each day in the Julian period is consecutively numbered from the beginning of the period(Jan. 1, 4713 B-C.), so that the number of days between two events can be calculated simply by subtracting the Julian number of the first event from that of the second event. The period of 7, 980 years was chosen because it is the product of the numbers of years in the solar cycle(28), lunar cycle(19), and the Roman cycle of indiction(15). The Julian period was proposed by Joseph Justus Scaliger in 1582 and named in honor of his father.
