The term "special crop" is used... to define a diverse group of crops including : pulses(chickpeas, dry beans, dry peas and lentils), buckwheat, canary seed, forages, ginseng, herbs(medicinal plants), spices, industrial hemp, mustard seed, safflower seed, seeds(for sowing), sunflower seed, sugar beets, tobacco and wild rice. It is a catch-all category for those crops not included in major grains and oilseeds or horticultural crops.

Le terme «cultures spéciales» sert à désigner un groupe diversifié de cultures qui comprend les légumineuses (pois chiches, haricots secs, pois secs et lentilles), le sarrasin, l'alpiste des Canaries, les plantes fourragères, le ginseng, les herbes (plantes médicinales), les épices, le chanvre industriel, la moutarde, le carthame, les semences, le tournesol, la betterave à sucre, le tabac ainsi que le riz sauvage. Il s'agit d'une catégorie générale qui englobe les cultures qui ne font pas partie des grandes cultures de céréales et de graines oléagineuses ou des cultures horticoles.
