A technique for bonding fibers of a web with meltable powders or fibers, using infrared heating, hot air, or hot-calendering.

Thermal bonding is somewhat unique to synthetic, thermoplastic fibers. Here, the fibers are distributed onto belts as webs that are subsequently bonded together with heat.

Thermally bonded fabric is usually produced by passing loose webs of synthetic fibers through calender rolls or ovens. Calender-bonded fabric is produced using hot calender rolls that press fibers together at selected points(much like film heat sealing) and create patterns of tiny dots of fused fibers that hold the web together. Oven-bonded fabric is produced when the fibers are fused together with hot air wherever they touch one another. Calender-bonded fabric is flat and cloth-like. Oven-bonded fabric is more open and lofty.

Tapeless splicing is used to form face-veneer panels from several pieces. The backs and faces are glued to the cross bands and the core. The edges of the core are planed on the jointer. The core stock is edge glued and cut to panel size by a clipper machine.... All the plies are then ready to be glued into a sheet. ... fiberboards belong to an earlier age(before 1945) when the wet-process manufacturing technique was dominant. In the wet-process technique, the wood is reduced to a coarse, fibrous form. The dry-process technique, used for products such as medium-density fiberboard, reduces the wood to fiber and forms the basic mat by a dry-sifting process. In contrast, the wet-process fiberboards carry the fiber in an aqueous suspension and form the mat, now called a wet lap, by draining the fiber suspension on a screen. The wet lap is then placed in a hot press, which has a screen, like a flyscreen, on the bottom side, permitting escape of the water that is squeezed out of the lap by hydraulic pressure in the press. The screen also permits escape of the steam generated in the final stages of the hot-pressing operation. The resulting product is then called screen-back hardboard, or smooth-one-side(S1S) hardboard.

Les panneaux de fibres bien connus datent d'avant 1945 alors que la méthode par voie humide dominait les autres. A type of three-ply plywood is made with four layers of veneer. In this structure the two center veneers are laid parallel to each other so that they function as one ply that is twice as thick as the veneer.... the next stage in manufacture is hot-pressing, in which the layups are loaded into a multiopening hydraulic hot press.... The thicker layups are loaded one per opening, whereas thinner layups may be loaded two per opening. Heat and pressure are applied by the hydraulic press, and the glue lines are brought to a temperature at which the glue sets.
