When sea level rises with the incoming tide to the point where it is higher than the river level upstream from the rock shelf, the seawater forces its way upstream against the flow of the river and through the narrow point in the channel. The resulting rapids, whirlpools and eddies create the impression that the falls have actually reversed.

The Middle Devonian Kwataboahegan, Moose River, Murray Island, and Williams Island Formations have a combined thickness of about 700 feet and are composed predominantly of marine limestones with minor shale and evaporites. Although these formations are well developed in Moose River Basin, only the Kwataboahegan is present on the mainland part of Hudson Bay Basin. A more complete Middle Devonian sequence is presumably present offshore, beneath Hudson Bay. The Kwataboahegan Formation disconformably succeeds the Stooping River. It consist of tan and light to dark chocolate brown, bituminous, coral limestone.
