The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. [...] Ce projet fait fond sur un investissement consenti par PTC en 1998 pour développer le système de drainage par gravité à l'aide de vapeur (SDGV) pour extraire des huiles lourdes. Tout comme le système SDGV, le procédé VAPEX utilisera deux puits horizontaux pour récupérer l'huile lourde. Toutefois, ce nouveau procédé utilise un solvant plutôt que la vapeur, ce qui élimine le besoin de brûler du carburant, (habituellement du gaz naturel) pour créer de la vapeur et réduit ainsi l'émission de gaz. De plus, le solvant utilisé dans le procédé VAPEX peut être réutilisé. Avec le procédé VAPEX, les solvants vaporisés sont injectés dans le réservoir par un puits horizontal.
