There has been a renewed interest in exploration for hydrocarbons in the Beaufort Sea. The last period of Beaufort Sea hydrocarbon exploration activities occurred from the 1970s to early 1990s, at which time a Beaufort Sea Oil Spill Cooperative was formed to respond to potential small and large spills. With cessation of hydrocarbon exploration in the early 1990s, the Beaufort Sea Oil Spill Cooperative was no longer required and was disbanded. 1, record 1, English, - Beaufort%20Sea%20Oil%20Spill%20Cooperative

Oil spills can be caused by the accidental or intentional release of any form of petroleum during any point in the oil production process, from drilling, refining, or storing to transporting. Oil can be spilled when a pipeline breaks, ships collide or are grounded ... underground storage tanks leak, or ... when an oil rig explodes or is damaged. 7, record 2, English, - oil%20spill
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
oil spill: Not to be confused with an "oil release" or "oil discharge" because an "oil spill" is the consequence of an oil release or discharge, and not the reverse. 8, record 2, English, - oil%20spill
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Since an oil spill may involve any type of hydrocarbons or a combination of hydrocarbons, the terms "oil, ""petroleum" and "hydrocarbon" are used interchangeably in a broad sense. 8, record 2, English, - oil%20spill
