Record 1 2011-01-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
Universal entry(ies)
DEF

A colorless pungent nonflammable poisonous gas HCl that fumes strongly in moist air and that is obtained primarily as a by-product of the chlorination of organic compounds or by burning hydrogen in chlorine.

OBS

Use : Production of vinyl chloride form acetylene, and alkyl chlorides from olefins; hydrochlorination; polymerization; isomerization, alkylation; and nitration reactions.

OBS

It yields hydrochloric acid when dissolved in water. See also that other record.

Entrée(s) universelle(s)
DEF

Record 2 1991-12-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Engineering
CONT

Hydrochlorination. Hydrogen chloride can react with a number of organic compounds by substitution. In the majority of cases, however, the substitution is with alcohols. The reaction in the case of methyl chloride is as follows : CH3OH + HCL [gives] CH3CH + H2O.... The addition of hydrogen chloride to unsaturated compounds to produce chlorinated hydrocarbons is of considerable importance industrially.

CONT

"hydrochlorinate" : to treat or combine with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride.... [derivative :] "hydrochlorination".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génie chimique
OBS
