HYDROELECTRIC DAM [7 records]

Record 1 2017-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
  • Hydroelectric Power Stations
OBS

Valves are associated with closed conduits and usually are designed for high-head conditions. Outlet works associated with discharge at a low level behind a dam or the discharge of water into a hydroelectric plant are usually controlled by valves.

OBS

Machinery to control and regulate flow usually consists of gates or valves. ... Low-head gates are usually associated with spillways and canals while high-head gates are usually to be found with outlet works and penstocks for dams and hydroelectric plants.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
  • Centrales hydro-électriques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Energy (Physics)
  • Ocean Energy
  • Tidal Power Stations
DEF

Kinetic and potential energy associated with the tides.

CONT

Tidal energy can be converted to mechanical and subsequently electrical form in several ways. The most common is to utilize a single natural basin that experiences tidal flow. The mouth of the basin is blocked by a dam that contains sluice gates and hydroelectric turbogenerators. In operation, water enters the basin through open sluice gates. At high tide the gates are closed. When the tide ebbs sufficiently water is released through the hydroturbines to generate electricity.

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie (Physique)
  • Énergie océanique
  • Centrales marémotrices
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Private-Sector Bodies and Committees
  • Hydroelectric Power Stations
OBS

Robert-Bourassa is a hydroelectric generating station on the La Grande River that is part of Hydro-Québec' s James Bay Project. The Station can generate 5, 616 MW and was commissioned in 1979-1981. Together with the adjacent La Grande-2-A generating station, it uses the reservoir and dam system of the Robert-Bourassa Reservoir to generate electricity. Intially known as La Grande-2, it was renamed after Robert Bourassa who, as Premier of Quebec(1970-1976 and 1985-1994) gave the James Bay Project a vital political impetus.

  • Centrales hydro-électriques
OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

A type of dam whose arch design enables the overall cross-section to be reduced as water pressure on the face of the dam is transmitted to the abutments.

CONT

Examples of arch dams are the Boulder Dam, Colorado, and in the UK the Galloway hydroelectric scheme.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
DEF

[...] ouvrage à courbure convexe tournée vers l'amont, permettant d'obtenir un effet de voûte [...]

CONT

OBS

Pluriel : barrages-voûtes.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A rise in streamflow to a crest in response to runoff generated by precipitation and its subsequent recession after the precipitation ends.

OBS

[It is]... caused by a period of precipitation, snow melt, dam failure or hydroelectric plant releases.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

OBS
