Hypersonic propulsion. Color Enhanced Supersonic Hydrogen Flame Through funding from the Hyper-X Program Office at NASA Langley, an experimental study of a dual-mode scramjet combustor is being conducted at the Aerospace Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia. Using conventional instrumentation and multiple laser-based diagnostic techniques, the study aims to further the understanding of the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes within the combustor and to resolve the uncertainty in CFD predictions of such flows. The majority of the experiments are being conducted using a high-enthalpy, continuous-flow facility. This facility simulates Mach 5 flight of a scramjet operating with ramp fuel injection of hydrogen. NASA Langley is performing numerical modeling of the combustor and these results are being compared with the experimental measurements. 2, record 6, English, - hypersonic%20propulsion

2, record 6, French, - propulsion%20hypersonique

In this form of transport detector for h. p. l. c. [high-performance liquid chromatography], the eluate is deposited upon a fine stainless steel wire that has been cleaned by being heated at 850°C. The volatile solvent is evaporated and the solute oxidized at 700-800°C in air to a mixture of carbon dioxide and water. The oxidation products are mixed with hydrogen and passed over a nickel catalyst at 330°C to give methane which is burnt in a flame ionization detector to give an electrical signal that can be amplified and recorded. The detector gives a linear response over a wide concentration range [...] The sensitivity has been improved and the noise level reduced by using either a ceramic(kaolin) or ceramic-metal(kaolin and copper) coating to the wire. 1, record 11, English, - wire%20transport%20detector

Flame Emissivity Detector. Another detector based on monitoring a specific property of a flame, its emissivity, was developed by Grant, who mixed coal gas in constant proportions with the effluent from a chromatographic column; this coal gas/effluent mixture burned at a wide stainless steel jet. The emissivity of the flame, changing as the flame’s carbon content is varied, is measured with the aid of a metal reflector, glass condensing lens, and selenium photocell; these are held in place from each other at their proper optical distances .... For low background emissivity values, response is nonlinear. However, by controlling the coal gas flow rate to maintain emissivity between 0.60 and 0.80 mV, detector response is linear over a wide temperature range. 1, record 13, English, - flame%20emissivity%20detector

For the determination of combustible components of organic origin in gas chromatographic effluents, various principles of detection based on flame reactions have been utilized, namely, the hydrogen flame temperature, flame emissivity, and flame ionization detectors. In all reported systems, specific flame properties were monitored. Whereas Scott measured the flame temperature of the exit gas at a small jet and Grant the flame's emissivity by optical means, Mc William and Dewar and Harley et al. advanced new detection concepts based on the electrical or ionization properties of hydrogen/oxygen flames. 1, record 13, English, - flame%20emissivity%20detector

Kaye adapted a Beckman far-ultraviolet DK-2 spectrophotometer as a gas chromatographic effluent detector to record the spectra of eluted, absorbing materials. Using heated flow-through cells... coupled directly to the thermal conductivity cell' s outlet, he found that absorptivities of most organic vapors were sufficiently large to permit quantitative analysis, and in some instances identification, where specific absorption patterns could be attributed directly to a functional group in certain molecular species. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the far-ultraviolet detector for many compounds possessing intense absorption bands exceeds that of the normal thermal conductivity detector and, in some cases, the hydrogen flame ionization detector. 1, record 17, English, - ultraviolet%20spectrophotometer%20detector

Flame Photometric Methods. When SO2 is burned in a hydrogen flame, the resulting electronically excited sulphur molecules emit light at 394 m wavelength which can be measured on a spectrophotometer. Several devices such as the Meloy FPD use this technique to measure SO2. Time response of these systems is fast... and reliable, and thus these devices are becoming more commonly used in APM surveys. The device is a moderately expensive point monitor but can be used in a mobile mode. 1, record 21, English, - flame%20photometric%20method
