HYDROGEN ION DEPOSITION [8 records]

Record 1 2010-05-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Metrology and Units of Measure
  • Air Pollution
CONT

Deposition of hydrogen ions is closely linked with rainfall amount. Although most of the region covered by the network had hydrogen ion inputs of about 0. 5 kg ha-1 yr-1, there were areas with much larger amounts of hydrogen deposited, exceeding 1 kg ha-1 yr-1.

Key term(s)

Domaine(s)

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

The potential is high for widespread environmental degradation, from acid rain and other pollutant deposition, because hydrogen ion concentration(acid, H+) in the aquatic environment is a critical factor controlling most chemical reactions.

CONT

Les précipitations n'ont sans doute qu'une influence faible sur l'extension de la pollution atmosphérique. Nous connaissons mal leur rôle sur les retombées des polluants au sol.

Record 3 1985-10-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
CONT

Deposition patterns for hydrogen and sulfate ion are similar to that of pH on this scale, with the pH 5 contour typically corresponding to a hydrogen ion deposition of 10 mg m-2y-1(10 meg m-2y-1) and to an excess sulfate(i. e., with seasalt sulfate deducted) ion deposition of ca. 1 g S m-2y-1(10 meg m-2y-1).

English

Subject field(s)

CONT

Because sulfur dioxide is the main precursor of acidity, and because understanding of the atmospheric behaviour of sulfur is most advance, sulfate and sulfur dioxide, in addition to hydrogen ion, are frequently used as reliable indicators of the acid deposition phenomenon.

CONT

The relative importance to plants of hydrogen ion concentration as distinct from total hydrogen ion deposition in precipitation is not known, but there is clear evidence from Scandinavia and North America indicating the importance of total deposition to soils and aquatic systems.
