HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA [8 records]

Record 1 2011-01-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Plant Biology
CONT

Since the 1950s, large amounts of sterols, mainly sitosterol, have been added to patients’ diets for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Several investigations have shown that plant sterols can lower total and low-density-lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol concentrations by 10% to 20% in people consuming diets rich in dietary cholesterol.

Domaine(s)

  • Biologie végétale
DEF

CONT

Hyperlipidemia, abnormal elevation of plasma cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels, is one of the most common clinical problems that confront the physician in daily practice. Much attention has been focused on these disorders because there is a strong association of hyperlipidemia especially hypercholesterolemia with development of atherosclerosis, and of hypertriglyceridemia with pancreatitis.

OBS

According to certain authors, "lipidemia" and "lipemia" are imprecise terms, whereas others use them as synonyms.

CONT

Subject field(s)

CONT

Tuberous xanthomas are firm, painless, red-yellow nodules. The lesions can coalesce to form multilobated tumors. Tuberous xanthomas usually develop in pressure areas such as the extensor surfaces of the knees, elbows and buttocks. Tuberous xanthomas are particularly associated with hypercholesterolemia and increased levels of LDL.

  • xanthoma tuberosum

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Liver and Biliary Ducts
DEF

A rare form of biliary cirrhosis of unknown etiology, in which small intrahepatic bile ducts are destroyed while the major intra-and extrahepatic ducts remain patent; it is characterized by chronic cholestasis with pruritus, jaundice, hypercholesterolemia and xanthomas, osteomalacia, and, in the later stages by portal hypertension and liver failure. Almost all patients have circulating antimitochondrial antibodies.

DEF

Abnormalities in plasma lipoproteins.

CONT

Dr. Frederickson early concentrated on the study of hereditary abnormalities in plasma lipoproteins... a new discipline he called genetic dyslipoproteinemia. At the time [1993], abnormal plasma lipids were either diagnosed as too much cholesterol... essential hypercholesterolemia(EHC)... or excess triglyceride essential hyperlipemia(EHL).

CONT

We have developed an oligonucleotide ligation assay(OLA) that enables us to screen for high-risk individuals(for familial hypercholesterolemia) by testing for 19 common mutations in the LDL receptor and the apolipoprotein B genes using automated genotyping-based two-step protocol... The novel OLA uses oligomeric pentaethyleneoxide mobility modifiers.

Treatment of severe hypercholesterolemia often requires high-dose therapy with a HMG-Coa reductase inhibitor, alone or in combination with bile acid-binding resin.

CONT
