HYPOTHERMIA [17 records]

Record 1 2025-01-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Non-Surgical Treatment
  • Pharmacology
CONT

Some centers use hypothermia with short-acting sedation(midazolam or propofol) over barbiturate-induced coma for management of refractory ICP [intracranial pressure] because barbiturates, used over days, can build up in adipose tissue(large volume of distribution).

Key term(s)
  • barbiturate induced coma

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitements non chirurgicaux
  • Pharmacologie
CONT

Coma barbiturique.

CONT

The potential exists for aircrew to be faced with unintentional cold water immersion during operations and training. Specifically, a risk management/assessment tool is required for the purpose of assessing cold water exposure risks. The following Cold Exposure Survival Model(CESM) predicts a casualty's cold physiological status and survivability due to hypothermia for both cold air exposure and water immersion taking into consideration clothing and equipment, as well as, the environmental conditions they encounter.

CONT

Paradoxical undressing is a term for a phenomenon frequently seen in cases of lethal hypothermia. Shortly before death, the person will remove all their clothes, as if they were burning up, when in fact they are freezing. Because of this, people who have frozen to death are often found naked...

CONT

Studies have shown that lowering brain temperature even by a few degrees decreases ischemic damage. In studies of out of hospital cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation(VF), induced hypothermia improves neurological outcomes. Recent evidence suggests that targeted temperature management of 36°C may provide equivalent benefit to mild hypothermia.

CONT

Wind chill warnings, based on local climate, are issued when significant wind chills are expected to occur.

CONT

Environment Canada issues winter weather warnings only when severe weather is expected to occur... [A] windchill warning [is issued] when the risk of frostbite or hypothermia exists. The criteria for windchill warnings vary in different parts of the [country] because people become acclimatized to the winter in their area.

DEF

Physiological condition in which the body core temperature falls below that considered normal for a homeothermic animal. When food resources are scarce, some species of birds are able to maintain a type of controlled hypothermia, or torpor, in which their metabolic expenditures and thus amount of energy required to survive are reduced.

DEF

Waiting phase. Between 45 minutes and rescue the victim will probably have found an air pocket and is in a phase of relative security which will allow them to survive for a considerable period. Death is either from slow asphyxia or hypothermia. With an adequate air supply hypothermia is slowed down.

CONT

Refers to treatment outcome analyses in which all individuals (dropouts and completers) are included. Data from dropouts are collected at the point at which they leave the study. Because this approach assumes that drop outs would not have continued to improve if they had remained in treatment, end-point analyses may underestimate the efficacy of a particular treatment.
