Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction(ICAI)... encompasses two primary areas. One is instructional programs that model the learner... These programs collect detailed data about the student's work and formulate a hypothesis about what the student knows and is thinking.... The other area is the use of expert systems... that contain all known information on a particular topic, a set of logic that ties all this information together..., and in some cases a program that allows a person to converse easily and in natural language with the computer. 8, record 11, English, - intelligent%20computer%2Daided%20instruction

The engineering approach is essentially the engineering design process. The scientific method is similar but is hypothesis driven vs. design driven. In the scientific method a hypothesis is generated as a potential answer to an important question. An experiment is tested to prove or disprove the hypotheses.... the design process is similar, but different in some important ways. Instead of a question there is a problem or need. Instead of a hypothesis there is a design constraint(s) of what the solution has to be able to do. 2, record 31, English, - engineering%20design%20process

A second channel [through which exchange rates are believed to affect productivity] is the factor price hypothesis... It implies the pairing of two parental genomes or their subunits (if more than one linkage group is present at the time of their replication). After a part of the genetic information of one strand has been copied, the copy process switches to the other of the paired strands and begins to incorporate the existing genetic information in the growing copy. If the parental strands contained different alleles, a recombinant chromosome is produced possessing some alleles of the one, some of the other. Record number: 63, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The confidence interval is the area of uncertainty for the estimating of a parameter. The use of this interval reflects the fact that a study provides one estimate of a parameter, out of the many estimates that would be possible if the study were repeated several times. If an X% CI is constructed for each repetition, X% of the intervals will contain the true value of the parameter. Investigators typically use confidence intervals of 90%, 95% or 99%. Thus, a 95% confidence interval indicates that there is a 95% probability that the confidence interval calculated from a particular study includes the true value of the parameter. If the interval includes a null value(a difference in means of 0, an odds ratio or a relative risk of 1, or a correlation coefficient of 0, for example), the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. A narrow confidence interval around a point estimate indicates a more precise estimate than a wide confidence interval. 3, record 63, English, - confidence%20interval

Record number: 63, Textual support number: 1 OBS
3, record 63, French, - intervalle%20de%20confiance

In order to prove the strand separation hypothesis, methods had to be found for the physical separation of parental and daughter DNA molecules. This was first accomplished through use of heavy isotopes such as N15. Bacteria grown in a medium containing the heavy isotope N15 have denser DNA than bacteria grown under normal conditions with N14. Heavy DNA can be separated from light DNA by equilibrium centrifugation in concentrated solutions of heavy salts such as cesium chloride. If DNA replication involves strand separation, definite predictions can be made about the density of the DNA molecules found after various growth intervals in a light medium. After one generation of growth, all the DNA molecules should contain one heavy and one light strand and thus be of intermediate hybrid density. This result is exactly what is observed. Likewise, after two generations of growth, half the DNA molecules are light and half hybrid, just as strand separation predicts. 1, record 72, English, - strand%20separation

2, record 72, French, - s%C3%A9paration%20des%20brins

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e. g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist(more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected. 1, record 84, English, - virino

Between 1972 and 1977 several studies confirmed the hypothesis that air pollutants could travel several thousands of kilometres before deposition and damage occurred. This also implied that cooperation at the international level was necessary to solve problems such as acidification. In response to these acute problems, a High-level Meeting within the Framework of the ECE on the Protection of the Environment was held at ministerial level in November 1979 in Geneva. It resulted in the signature of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution by 34 Governments and the European Community(EC). The Convention was the first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution on a broad regional basis. Besides laying down the general principles of international cooperation for air pollution abatement, the Convention sets up an institutional framework bringing together research and policy. The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution entered into force in 1983. It has been extended by eight specific protocols. 2, record 88, English, - Convention%20on%20Long%2Drange%20Transboundary%20Air%20Pollution
