The smallest possible impulsion generated by a thruster.

Performance measurements for a given thruster will rely on one of two different values : the total delivered impulse or the average thrust. Both are done via the measurement of the thrust stand dynamics. The impulse bit measurement involves measuring the velocity before and after a thruster pulse. An average thrust measurement involves either a measurement or a steady state deflection of the thruster arm.

Propulsion Module. The ATV [Automatic Transfer Vehicle] Space Craft itself includes the propulsion bay accommodating the Propulsion and Reboost Subsystem. This bi-propellant system comprises : four main engines of 490 N each with a specific impulse of more than 310 s each twenty attitude control thrusters of 220 N each and a minimum impulse bit MIP) of less than 5 Ns. The system uses mixed oxides of nitrogen as oxidiser. Fuel and oxidiser are stored in eight identical 1 m-diameter titanium tanks. The same tanks are used for ATV propulsion and International Space Station reboost.

L'ATV [Automatic Transfer Vehicle] n'est que le prolongement de l'étage supérieur d'une Ariane 5. Il se présente donc sous la forme d'un cylindre de 5,45 mètres de diamètre sur 2,5 mètres de longueur. Il est équipé en standard d'un module de propulsion composé de huit petits moteurs à réaction et d'un module d'avionique qui intègre les réservoirs d'ergols, les circuits électroniques ainsi que les systèmes de régularisation thermique, de production d'énergie et de télécommunications.

Trois configurations de base sont prévues pour l'ATV [Automatic Transfer Vehicle]. Il peut notamment recevoir une mini-module logistique pressurisé (MPLM), une coque porteuse et deux palettes logistiques non pressurisées (ULC), ou un module pressurisé en plus d'une structure porte-réservoir ouverte.

A downhole "real time" data gathering and transmitting system that sends information from the drill bit to the surface by one of several means.

OBS

The data transmitted by some form of telemetry-hardwire or electronics, or hydraulic impulse includes drilling angle and rate, temperature, type formation, and condition of the bit. The MWD system is the most advanced yet developed to keep the driller and geologist informed on conditions several thousand feet down hole.

[This technology allows a driller to] determine soil properties and measure whether his well is on course without pulling pipe and bit and lowering instruments into the hole.
