La terminologie habituellement retenue pour nommer les systèmes à partir de trigrammes utilise l'appellation RIC (réacteur instrumentation coeur) pour le premier et RPN (réacteur protection nucléaire) pour le second. Le système RIC mesure la distribution relative en 3D de la puissance à l'intérieur du cœur du réacteur avec une très bonne précision liée à un procédé de mesure interne au réacteur. C'est pourquoi on l'appellera par la suite système de référence.
