Compost teas are liquid versions of the solid compost material. They contain soluble plant nutrients and a complex community of beneficial microorganisms. While there are an infinite number of ways to prepare compost teas, basically all teas begin by mixing compost in water in order to extract plant nutrients and microorganisms. Liquid teas can be applied as soil drenches, foliar sprays or incorporated into irrigation systems.

CONT

A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain(locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point--past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids--for prospectors heading for Dawson(then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years(1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. Though the mines shut down in Yukon and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ended its operations

In Canada (with seven exceptions as of December 31, 2004), the name of an inhabited place has the same form in English and French, which form is listed in the Gazetteer of the province or territory in accordance with the inscription in the Incorporation Act of the entity. This rule also applies for the historic designation of an inhabited place, even if the designation is not or no longer gazetteered.

OBS

The "city of Whitehorse" is the geographical entity: "The city of Whitehorse is surrounded by mountains.", while the "City of Whitehorse" refers to its governing body or administrative instance: "The City of Whitehorse relied on Yukon’s "Decade of Anniversaries" (1990-1999) to attract tourists: among others, the 50th anniversary of the Alaska Highway, 100 years of Royal Canadian Mounted Police presence and the 100th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush.».

PARKS CANADA. An historically inhabited place is an entity which was inhabited in the past but is no longer inhabited. As its name does not appear in the relevant provincial or territorial Gazetteer, the only evidence of its existence comes from history books or archival documents. This is the case of, among others, "Port-la-Joye" (P.E.I.), "Lower Fort Garry" (Man.), "Fish Creek" (Sask.), "Ninstints" (B.C.) and "Dawson City" (Y.T.), names of historically inhabited places used in Parks Canada toponyms.

OBS

Sometimes, a distinction must be made between the historical designation and the present designation of a given toponym. For example, history texts confirm the existence in present-day Nova Scotia of "Port-Royal"(an historically inhabited place), where Champlain built the Habitation in 1605. The Gazetteer for the province indicates the existence, near the historical site, of the rural community now incorporated under the name "Port Royal"(currently gazetteered inhabited place) ;the same comment applies to the historical "Grand-Pré" and the currently inhabited "Grand Pré". Similarly, "Castle Hill" and "Signal Hill"(Nfld.) are entities that were once inhabited and were located on the geographical entities having the same names that are currently gazetteered and have a different form in FR :"Castle Hill(Nfld.)--colline Castle(T.-N.) "and "Signal Hill(Nfld.)--colline Signal(T.-N.) ".

PARCS CANADA.

-- colline Signal (T.-N.)».
