The main types of non-price competition are product differentiation and advertising. Through product differentiation, a firm tries to distinguish its product from that of its rivals. This may be achieved by improving the product's quality, efficiency, etc., and by periodic restyling. Besides changing its product to suit consumer demand, a firm may try to increase its share of the market by attracting consumers by means of advertising and sales promotion. Less important types of non-price competition include favourable terms of sale and customer services. 1, record 28, English, - non%2Dprice%20competition

Recent advances in storage technology provides an effective way to store video in digital and compressed form. This, coupled with the recent dramatic increase in the bandwidth of networks, makes it possible now to provide to viewers "movies on demand", thereby eliminating the inflexibility inherent in todays broadcast cable systems. A movie on demand(MOD) server is a computer system that stores movies in compressed digital form and provides support for different portions of compressed movie data to be accessed and transmitted concurrently. Such a server not only enables viewers to watch a movie at any time they desire, but also enables them to apply VCR operations like pause, resume, fast-forward and rewind the movies they are currently watching. 3, record 44, English, - film%2Don%2Ddemand

The demand increase induced by vouchers depends on the size of the population served(relative to the size of the market), the amount of the subsidy received by each household, and the extent to which the subsidy is spent on housing. The amount of the subsidy is easiest to evaluate : housing subsidies are fairly generous, as we might expect from a program that provides welfare recipients and over very low-income households with the median rental housing available. For example, the 1997 Fair Market Rent for a two bedroom apartment in the Oakland MSA is $794, which is about equal to welfare and food stamps benefits combined. 2, record 50, English, - median%20rental%20housing%20property

Zone of active decomposition is characterized by the following changes : 1) dissolved oxygen(DO) will be at its absolute minimum; 2) odors and gases bubbling up. In the zone of recovery the river will slowly restore its oxygen through aeration process. The anaerobic conditions will disappear. Case of inelastic derived demand. Suppose that a particular building-trades union, such as the electricians’, raises wages. This case emphasizes the factors making for inelastic demand and a small resulting drop in employment of electricians.(1) Note that in the short run, employers cannot substitute other factors-such as machines or plasterers-for electricians.(2) Do not forget the importance of being unimportant : The total cost of a house will be little affected by a change in the wage rate of electricians alone. This fact will tend to cause only a mild reduction of employment as a result of an increase in their wages.(3) Suppose there is a great housing shortage so that people feel they need homes desperately. Inelasticity of demand for the final product, housing, will lower the derived elasticity for electricians.(4) Suppose that all practicing electricians must be in the union, so that an increase in wages is not followed by a great increase in nonunion labor supplied. This inelasticity of supply of other factors will tend to make the demand for union electricians inelastic.(5) Suppose, finally, that administered pricing or public regulation will not permit the prices at which houses are available to change much. This will make for a little quantity of houses sold and hence inelastic demand for the factors that build house. 1, record 77, English, - inelastic%20derived%20demand

Quand l'élasticité a une valeur numérale inférieure à 1, on dit que la demande est inélastique : elle s'accroît moins que proportionnellement lorsque le prix baisse; elle ne répond guère aux hausses de prix. 1, record 79, French, - in%C3%A9lastique
