English

Subject field(s)
  • Protection of Property
  • Urban Studies
CONT

The impacts of earthquakes usually involve chain processes through which they nonlinearly affect our infrastructure(e. g., buildings, lifeline facilities, and transportation facilities). In addition, the chain processes include effects(intermediate effects) that may cause infrastructure damage, such as collapsed components, sediment disaster, fire, and liquefaction.

CONT

... emergency responders are directed to conduct a windshield survey to gain situational awareness, allowing emergency managers to develop a common operating picture, develop incident priorities, and initiate a response and recovery plan.... The windshield survey... allows incident commanders(ICs) to determine how much damage has occurred; evaluate immediate needs to ensure the health, safety, and security of the community; and provide a basis for... needs such as mass-care shelters, food, and infrastructure restoration.

OBS

In French, the term "évaluation superficielle" designates an assessment that can take place by other means than by driving.

Record 5 2018-11-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction Materials
  • Solar Energy
DEF

A road surfacing material consisting of a thin layer of photovoltaic cells covered with glass aggregates bound by a translucent resin that can convert solar energy into electricity as well as recharge electric vehicles by induction.

CONT

Existing roads merely need to be covered with the solar panels–which are in fact slabs–without the need for any additional engineering work. These slabs were created so that vehicles, including trucks, can pass along without causing any damage. The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells carefully wrapped in several layers to make the slabs exceptionally resistant. Thin sheets of polycrystalline silicon... help to capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity.... In designing the photovoltaic slabs, [the company] also judged important not to create a product that requires the destruction of an existing infrastructure.

  • Énergie solaire
DEF
