CONT

The drug to be administered first is reconstituted in its original parenteral vial and then added by needle and syringe to the partial-fill container. The needle of the piggyback delivery system is inserted in the Y-site or gum-rubber injection port of a hanging primary infusion set. Flow of the primary intravenous fluid is stopped while the drug solution in the partial-fill container is administered(30 to 60 min). After the drug solution has been infused totally, the primary fluid flow is reestablished.

The jacket and swivel tethering system facilitates animal movement, yet permits sampling or protection of instrumentation and equipment. It allows much greater movement and permits simultaneous fluid sampling, drug infusion, and electronic measuring and monitoring. The tethered animal can be maintained comfortably and humanely for months, while fully instrumented. The light weight and flexibility of the tether, combined with the low friction of the swivel, inhibits very little of the animal' s normal cage activity.

CONT

OBS

"Piggyback" intravenous administration is a means of administering medication via the fluid pathway of an established primary infusion line. Features and Advantages : 1. Drugs may be given on an intermittent basis through a "keep-open" infusion. 2. The secondary bottle contains the medication; this may be single dose or multiple dose. 3. When desired, the primary infusion is clamped off and the prescribed amount of medication from the secondary bottle is administered. 4. A check-valve performs the following functions : a. Permits the primary infusion to flow after the medication has been administered b. Prevents air from entering the system c. Prevents secondary fluid from "running dry" d. Permits less mixing of primary fluid with secondary solution 5. Higher flow rates can be achieved by elevating either of the receptacles.
