INHERITED STRUCTURE [11 records]

Record 1 2013-09-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

Silent genes and everlasting fruits and vegetables?... An intriguing feature of gene silencing is that partial or almost complete gene inactivation can be obtained, depending on the position(and perhaps the structure and copy number) of the transgene. For both sense and antisense gene silencing, transformants can be selected where genetic change is stably inherited.

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
CONT

Familial hypophosphatermia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by impaired transport of phospate and diminished Vitamin-D metabolism in the kidneys. In addition, calcium and phosphate are not absorbed property in the intestines, which can lead to softening of bones. Familial hypophosphatemia is a form of rickets, a childhood bone disease that results in progressive softening and weakening of the bone structure. In adults, rickets is known as osteomalacia.

French

OBS

CONT

Scientists report in Wednesday's edition of the journal Nature Genetics that they have created the first functioning, artificial human chromosome. The new technology, developed by researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Athersys Inc., may eventually provide a way to cure inherited diseases by altering the cell' s genetic structure. Athersys officials say they would like to use artificial chromosomes as a way to package treatments for diseases affecting the immune system, such as AIDS, as well as blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia.

CONT

DEF

A computer that can calculate more that a trillion mathematical operations per second. Based on massively parallel processing, it will team hundreds or thousands of independent processors-silicon chips that perform calculations-to solve problems too imposing for even the most powerful computers today. It will help in areas like... simulating the body's reaction to a new drug; mapping human genetic structure to better understand inherited diseases : generating models of world's climates, recognizing spoken languages and images in order to improve the versatility of factory robots.

CONT

True teraflop machines (Mr. Gordon Bell, an American guru of supercomputing, christened them ultracomputers) will be available in 1995 for a bargain - basement $ 40m.

DEF

In this structural type the aggregates or groups are arranged in relatively thin horizontal plates, leaflets, or lenses.(...) Although it is most noticeable in the surface layers of virgin soils, platy structure may characterize the subsoil horizons as well. Although most structural features are usually a product of soil forming forces, the "platy" type is often inherited from the parent materials, especially when the latter have been laid down by water or ice.
