Allosteric enzymes function through reversible, noncovalent binding of a regulatory metabolite called a modulator. They have other shapes or conformations induced by the binding of modulators. An example is feedback inhibition. An allosteric effect is described as a variation in proteins activity through the interaction of another molecule at a site on the protein which is distinct from the "active" site.(Ex. Hb and BPG.) 2, record 1, English, - allosteric%20enzyme

This curve, characteristic of the lateral interactions between certain neurons in the cortex, is referred to as the Mexican-hat function. A centrally excited processing element excites a small neighborhood around it with positive feedback connections. As the lateral distance from the central node increases, the degree of excitation falls until it becomes an inhibition.... Finally, a weak positive feedback extends a considerable distance away from the central node. 1, record 2, English, - Mexican%2Dhat%20function

2, record 2, French, - fonction%20sombrero

Fermentation system in which the product is continuously removed by extraction with a solvent that is insoluble in water, not harmful to the organism, simple to recover (e.g., by distillation) and in which the fermentation product is considerably more soluble than it is in water. One advantage of this type of reactor is that products may be removed before they reach concentrations that limit the rate of fermentation by feedback inhibition. in feedback inhibition the end-product of a metabolic pathway acts as an allosteric inhibitor of the first enzyme of this metabolic chain. Thus, when enough product is synthesized, the entire chain can be shut off, and useless accumulation of metabolites is avoided. An example is provided by aspartate transcarbamylase, the first enzyme in pyrimidine biosynthesis, which is inhibited by CTP, the end-product of this biosynthetic pathway. 1, record 4, English, - transcarbamylase

1, record 4, French, - transcarbamylase
