INOTROPIC [8 records]

Record 1 2023-07-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Morphology and General Physiology
  • Muscles and Tendons
  • The Heart
CONT

The major therapeutic use of cardiac glycosides is the treatment of congestive heart failure, a condition characterized by decreased contractility of ventricular muscle(i. e., negative inotropism).... cardiac glycosides have a positive inotropic action, which may counteract the negative inotropism of the failed ventricle.

OBS

inotropism: The modification of muscular contractility.

CONT

Dobutamine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) for short-term use in patients with decreased contractility due to heart failure or cardiac surgical procedures leading to cardiac decompensation.... Dobutamine is used as a pharmacological agent and has both inotropic and chronotropic effects depending on the dose..... Dobutamine's inotropic effect increases contractility, leading to decreased end-systolic volume and, therefore, increased stroke volume.

Domaine(s)
  • Médicaments
CONT

CONT

Glucagon is a polypeptide hormone produced and secreted by the alpha cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans; it increases glucose production and counteracts the effect of insulin in maintaining normoglycaemia in the fasting state. In addition to its metabolic effects, glucagon is considered to be a cardiostimulant agent that increases heart rate and contractility... The earliest report on the inotropic effect of glucagon... showed an increase in heart rate and contractility in dogs after adding glucagon to heart-lung preparations.... Glucagon also caused inotropic effects in isolated preparations of different animals species.

OBS

inotropic : Modifying the contractility of muscle.

CONT

"Humulus scandens" is a native of E. Asia. ... A decoction of the dried or freshly grated leaves is used as a febrifuge and an antidysenteric. The plant contains luteolin-7-glycoside.

CONT

Some... have studied the separate effects of some of the isolated compounds of hawthorn. Luteolin-7-glycoside, hyperoside and rutin have been found to be the most active inotropic and coronary vasodilatory components, as well as acting as lusitropic agents(i. e. capable of accelerating relaxation after a contraction).

DEF

Drug which increases the contractility of the heart muscle. The most commonly used glycosides acting on the heart are obtained from the leaves of Digitalis purpurea and lanata, from the seeds of Strophantus kombé and gratus, and also from the squill. Cardiac glycosides act by raising the concentration of calcium ions available intracellularly for electromechanical coupling. They thus exert a positive inotropic effect on the healthy, the hypertrophied, the still adequate, and the failing heart.
