Balloon. Shall be reported when the height of the base of a layer aloft or vertical visibility into a surface based layer is determined by observation of a ceiling balloon, pilot balloon or aerological balloon, and the height is computed from the assumed rate of ascent and the time interval between the release of the balloon and its entry into the base of the layer or disappears into a surface based layer. 1, record 3, English, - aerological%20balloon

Ballon. 1, record 3, French, - ballon%20a%C3%A9rologique

The top of the inversion layer is where the air reaches its highest temperature. The air below that level cannot ascend. (Because each parcel of air below has a cooler temperature, it is therefore denser, and gravity keeps it trapped in place.) 1, record 4, English, - top%20of%20the%20inversion%20layer
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Warm air has formed a layer on top of cooler surface air. This layer is called the temperature inversion. This means that temperatures actually rise as we measure farther up into the air. Little or no mixing occurs and concentrations of atmospheric particulate pollution and vapors are trapped below the level where temperatures again decrease with altitude. This point is referred to as the top of the inversion. Inversions can occur at the surface or aloft in the atmosphere. 5, record 4, English, - top%20of%20the%20inversion%20layer
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 3 CONT
... a hot-air or gas balloon attempting to descend through a subsidence inversion will find, first, a possible bump or hesitancy of the balloon to "bust" through the top of the inversion. Once through the top of the inversion, the balloon may require much more lift than was required above the inversion top to maintain the same rate of descent. 3, record 4, English, - top%20of%20the%20inversion%20layer
