CONT

The shawm is a double reed instrument with a conical bore and is the predecessor of the modern oboe.... In Europe the shawm was used extensively during the 14th to the 17th centuries, mainly for playing outdoors at ceremonial occasions.... The reed is not held between the lips as with the oboe but is set in a type of holder known as a pirouette. The lips are pressed against the flat face of the pirouette, allowing the reed to vibrate freely in the mouth. This gives a sound more powerful than that of the oboe, but the player lacks the degree of control provided by lip pressure on the reed.

CONT

Critical lip pressure method... If hot water or a water/steam mixture is discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe, and if the pressure is measured at the discharge lip of the pipe, this pressure is a measure of the heat flow of the discharged fluid.

CONT

Method of cones. This is a relatively simple method of measuring the mass flow, quality and enthalpy characteristics of a wet bore by using a cyclone separator and a series of measuring cones... The method avoids the separate measurement of the water(though a lip pressure discharge pipe could provide useful corroborative evidence) and enables the dryness and enthalpy of the bore mixture to be deduced indirectly. It also dispenses with the need for long straight pipes required when a sharp-edged orifice is used for the steam measurement.

CONT

Critical lip pressure method... If hot water or a water/steam mixture is discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe, and if the pressure is measured at the discharge lip of the pipe, this pressure is a measure of the heat flow of the discharged fluid. James has deduced... [a] formula expressed in f. p. s. units... Where the two phases of a water/steam mixture are segregated by means of a cyclone separator the water can be measured either by a cooled orifice or, after allowing for the flashed steam, by means of a V-notch or weir. Alternatively, however, the water may simply be discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe and measured by applying... [James] formula. By measuring the temperature of the water leaving the separator its enthalpy is made known, and... [the flow] can be deduced from... [the critical lip pressure].
