In boiler practice, the heat of combustion of a fuel is the amount of heat, expressed in Btu, generated by the complete combustion(or oxidation) of a unit weight(1 pound in the United States) of fuel. Calorific value or "fuel Btu value" are other terms used... For accurate heat values of solid and liquid fuels calorimeter determinations are required. However, approximate heat values may be determined for most coals if the ultimate chemical analysis is known.

Systems Analysis of a Future Semi-Reusable Launcher, Based on a High Thrust Bleed Cycle Rocket Engine. In this paper a high thrust, cryogenic bleed cycle engine, to be used for propulsion of future reusable booster stages(liquid fly back boosters), of an expendable heavy lift launcher, is analyzed. The system configuration remains unchanged, in terms of total available fuel and the number of engines, hereas the variation of the engine parameters result in a change of total system mass and payload capacity. Different arrangements of bleed cycles are being analyzed, and compared with each other. The paper describes a simplified heat transfer model, used in the analysis of the suggested cycles. The thrust chamber design is discussed and a preliminary design of the booster vehicle, including a trajectory analysis, is presented.

Early telemetry from the spin-stabilized IMAGE spacecraft indicated that the vehicle's initial nutation was not decaying. This behavior was especially puzzling because the spacecraft's passive nutation damper behaved as expected while IMAGE was attached to the spinning upper stage.... In a partially-filled ring damper, the excess kinetic energy associated with nutation is dissipated by fluid viscosity when inertial forces cause the liquid to move through the tube. However, post-launch analysis indicated that the IMAGE damper liquid was immobilized by surface tension. This was an unanticipated consequence of the vehicle's low spin rate.
