The natural surface of the photopolymer flexographic plate is smooth and non-porous. Ink does not lie uniformly on this surface. Printing a good solid requires more ink and pressure than necessary. Excessive ink and pressure are the basis for most of flexo’s printing problems. Cells in the plates significantly reduce the need for excessive ink and printing impression, and hence provide for a system more conducive to optimum print quality.

When ink is transferred from the smooth, non-porous surface of the photopolymer flexo printing plate to the smooth surface of many substrates, it has a natural tendency to bead up, form liquid clumps and "river, "similar to the way rain droplets gather and trickle around on fresh asphalt.

Component of mixing plant in which materials are mixed together.

Two types of plants are used to make hot mix asphalt concrete, the batch type mixing plant and the drum mix plant A batch plant mixes, then drops individual batches of hot mix asphalt concrete and a drum mix plant is a continuous flow type of production plant. In a batch type mixing plant different sizes of aggregates are drawn from a multi-bin cold feed system into an enclosed counter flow rotary drum. After the aggregate is dried, it is lifted to the top of the batching tower and on to a screen system which separates the aggregate into different sizes and then drops the different sizes into individual bins. Aggregate is then drawn from the hot bins in predetermined amounts, weighed and dropped into a pug mill mixer with the correct amount of liquid asphalt. The batch is mixed, then dropped into a waiting truck or sent to a surge bin until trucks arrive. In a drum mix plant a metered, four compartment, cold feed bin system supplies the exact amount of the required size of aggregates to the rotating drum mixer The drum mixer is an inclined, parallel flow dryer/mixer in which the aggregate is dried and heated in the upper section of the drum, then mixed with liquid in the lower part of the drum. From the drum the hot mix is discharged into a hot elevator which lifts the finished product to a surge hopper or storage silo both equipped to load trucks.

An asphalt distributor will spread a coating of asphalt over the surface, which is followed by a chipspreader placing the layer of rock. This rock is then rolled into place with a roller. This process should take about 20 minutes at any one location. No traffic is allowed on the liquid asphalt, and traffic on the unrolled rock will be limited to critical traffic only. After rolling, the road will be reopened to light, slow moving traffic. There are small surface rocks that will roll off into the gutter. This is also normal, and city crews will sweep up the excess aggregate within 24 to 48 hours. Drivers are asked to keep speeds slow to avoid damage to the fresh surface and to avoid throwing loose rocks into windshields.
