Carbon dioxide prevents combustion by displacing the oxygen in the air surrounding a fire.... carbon dioxide extinguishers have a relatively short range because the agent is expelled in the form of a gas/snow cloud... the agent is retained as a liquid at 800 to 900 psi at temperatures below 88 °F, and it is self-expelling. 6, record 2, English, - carbon%20dioxide%20fire%20extinguisher

The materials used in cloud seeding include two primary categories, tied to the type of precipitation process involved. One category includes those which act as glaciogenic(ice-forming) agents, such as silver iodide, dry ice and compressed liquid propane or carbon dioxide, which are appropriate in cloud systems where the precipitation process is primarily cold(colder than freezing). Of the ice-forming materials, the most commonly used is silver iodide. 3, record 3, English, - ice%2Dforming%20substance

Raw sugar is light brown and slightly sticky because the crystals have a thin film of molasses clinging to them. Refining removes this film and produces white crystals of sugar. First the raw sugar is rinsed of its brownish film. Then the crystals are dissolved in water and the liquid is filtered to remove impurities. The sugar is then crystallized, and the crystals are separated from the liquid by centrifuges and dried in hot air. The liquid must be centrifuged several times. Other methods of refining involve the use of milk of lime, carbon dioxide, and repeated boiling. The refined crystals are classified and stored in bins to be packaged or sent to market. 2, record 11, English, - refining

Several [internal cooling] systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods. With the liquified gas system, immediately after the parison has been expanded, liquid carbon dioxide or nitrogen is atomized through a nozzle in the blow pin into the interior of the bottle. The liquid quickly vaporizes, removing heat, and exhausts at the end of the cycle. In practice, this method has improved production rates by 25 to 35%. A disadvantage is the cost of the liquified gas. If its consumption is not precisely controlled, the total cost savings becomes minimal. 1, record 17, English, - liquified%20gas%20system

The other end is sealed by a metal disc weaker than the shell and held in place by a cap which has holes at about 45° to the axis of the cylinder. The cylinder is filled with liquid carbon dioxide at a pressure of 1, 000 pounds per square inch and inserted in the borehole with the cap holes pointing outward. The heating mixture is lit and raises the gas pressure so that the disc is sheared; the carbon dioxide escaping through the angular holes tends to hold the cylinder in place, break and push the coal forward. 1, record 21, English, - carbon%20dioxide%20blasting

1, record 21, French, - abatage%20au%20gaz%20carbonique

Instrument which is used to dry biological specimens for electron microscopes. It makes use of the critical point of carbon dioxide, i. e. the point at which both the liquid and the gas states of the carbon dioxide are at the same temperature and pressure, for the drying process; in this way it preserves the surface morphology of the specimens.
