It was established by Lord Kelvin that the vapour pressure over the surface of a water drop in equilibrium with its surroundings is greater that over a plane water surface. This vapour pressure difference is inversely proportional to the radius of the drop. The vapour pressure over a drop is then greater than the saturation vapour pressure for the liquid concerned, since the saturation vapour pressure is defined as that over a plane surface. 3, record 1, English, - plane%20water%20surface

Soft rime is a white ice deposition that forms when the water droplets in light freezing fog or mist freeze to the outer surfaces of objects, with calm or light wind... Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales; they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Factors that favour soft rime are small drop size, slow accretion of liquid water, high degree of supercooling, and fast dissipation of latent heat of fusion. 2, record 2, English, - soft%20rime

Deep ocean storage includes direct injection of liquid carbon dioxide into the water column at intermediate depths(1000-3000 m), or at depths greater than 3000 m, where liquid CO2 becomes heavier than sea water, so it would drop to the ocean bottom and form a so-called "CO2 lake. " 3, record 3, English, - ocean%20storage
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Not to be confused with "ocean sequestration." The term "ocean storage" refers to the injection of CO2 into the ocean while "ocean sequestration" includes the injection of CO2 as well as other methods for enhancing the ocean’s CO2 uptake. Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
On forcing a cell suspension at high pressure through a narrow orifice, the rapid pressure drop provides a very powerful means of disrupting the cells. In practice it is simple to design equipment to subject the cell suspension to shear forces before releasing the pressure. By changing the pressure applied, cells may be disrupted completely or only sufficiently to release periplasmic enzymes.... [Experimentors have] used a liquid shear system for the disruption of chloroplasts. The suspension was passed through a needle valve at pressures up to 20, 000 p. s. i. and a flow rate of 10 ml/min. Under these conditions, rupture of E. coli was indicated by an increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity. 2, record 4, English, - liquid%20shear
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In practical terms liquid shear is associated with the generation of heat. As a result subsequent increases in the temperature of the suspension of up to 40 °C may be encountered. Cell suspensions must, therefore, be introduced to the apparatus at 0-4°C to minimise loss of enzyme activity. If recycling is used then cooling before re-entry is essential. Equally, with this type of equipment the best results are obtained by using a homogeneous cell suspension. Irregular particle sizes owing to filamentous or pelleted growth modes reduce the efficiency of cell breakage. 3, record 4, English, - liquid%20shear

In order for a cloud particle (water droplet or ice particle) to fall as precipitation it must grow to a minimum size. One of the growth mechanisms of water droplets is by the condensation of water vapor onto the surface of the droplet. The Imhoff septic tank, an improvement over the ordinary septic tank, is still used in the United States; it is a two-story structure with the upper compartment used for settling the sewage, the lower one for the anaerobic disintegration of sludge. The Vapor Diffusion Apparatus(VDA-2) uses the "hanging drop" method often used on Earth to crystallize proteins. The method is quite simple. Proteins are mixed into a solution that makes them grow-the precipitant solution-and squeezed onto the tip of a syringe. While exposed to the air part of the liquid evaporates, the concentration rises, and crystals form. 3, record 13, English, - hanging%20drop

As the larger droplets fall, they collide and combine with smaller droplets, making them even larger. The combining together of larger with smaller droplets is called coalescence. 4, record 14, French, - coalescence

The instrument consists of a smooth-walled cylinder in which is a piston. The piston is mechanically raised at a predetermined frequency and is allowed to fall freely back to its minimum position. Within the cylinder is an accurately machined orifice through which the measured material enters the cylinder when the piston is raised and is displaced by the weight of the piston on its free fall. Thus the measurement of the time required by the piston to displace the material through the orifice is directly proportional to the viscosity of the material. 1, record 21, English, - falling%2Dpiston%2Dtype%20viscosity%2Dmeasuring%20element

Air release chambers are installed ahead of any metering equipment to ensure accurate measurement of fuel flow. They may be installed in either the pumphouse or on the dispensing platform. They operate on the reduced flow velocity principle which separates and eliminates air from the fuel. As the fuel enters the air release chamber(the diameter of which is much greater than the diameter of the inlet to the air release body), the velocity of the flow is greatly reduced allowing an interval of time for the air to separate from the fuel. The air, being lighter than the liquid, rises to the top of the chamber, where it remains until a sufficient quantity has accumulated to lower the liquid level, causing the float to drop, which in turn opens the vent valve and allows the accumulated air to escape. In most cases the line from the air vent is returned to the storage or scavenger tank to prevent spraying fuel into the surrounding area in case of a malfunction of the air release chamber. 1, record 23, English, - air%20release%20chamber

1, record 23, French, - chambre%20de%20d%C3%A9sa%C3%A9ration
