LODE GOLD [14 records]

Record 1 2006-11-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Gold and Silver Mining
CONT

Lode gold deposits are present in all of the major tectonic subdivisions of the Canadian landmass but occur dominantly in terranes with an abundance of volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of low to medium metamorphic grade.

CONT

Record 2 2006-01-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Economic Geology
  • Gold and Silver Mining
CONT

Gold is a commodity that occurs in a wide variety of geological settings and ore deposit types. Byproduct gold from volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, nickel-copper deposits, porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits and vein copper deposits accounts for approximately one third of Canadian resources. The remainder occurs in gold-only deposits which comprise placers(5%) and bedrock sources(60%) which are termed lode gold deposits...

CONT

... the economics of PGE [platinum group element] deposits are broadly analogous to those of gold-only deposits, with ore grades from 8 to 20 g/t combined PGE + Au ...

DEF

Subject field(s)

  • Metals Mining
DEF

A mineral deposit consisting of a zone of veins, veinlets, disseminations, or planar breccias ...

CONT

A lode consists of several veins spaced closely enough so that all of them, together with the intervening rock, can be mined as a unit.

CONT

A system of veins that can be mined directly forms a lode, for example the mother lode of the California gold rush.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Various Metal Ores
DEF

An epigenetic mineral filling of a fracture in a host rock, in tabular or sheetlike form, often with associated replacement of the host rock; a mineral deposit of this form and origin.

CONT

A system of veins that can be mined directly forms a lode, for example the mother lode of the California gold rush.

OBS

A vein and a lode are generally the same thing; the former being more scientific, the latter, a miner’s name for it.

OBS

Lode, as used by miners, is nearly synonymous with the term vein, as employed by geologists.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minerais divers (Mines métalliques)
DEF

CONT

In the early days of lode gold mining, stamp mills were used for crushing the ore. Where there was free gold in the ore, a silver-plated copper plate was placed so that the discharge through the screen from the mortar, with the addition of water, flowed down over this plate which was coated with quicksilver, allowing the free gold to become amalgamated and retained to the plate. The man who operated such a mill was called an amalgamator.

CONT

Amalgamator ... Turns valves or opens gates to regulate flow of ore and water over mercury-coated plates. Adjusts angle of plates to facilitate collection of amalgam. Scrapes accumulated amalgam from plates and coats plates with mercury.
