On the 25 m or so of the lines, multiple "streamers" are attached : strands of often brightly coloured line attached on a swivel to the main line. Back vent. A pipe or system of pipes connected to the drainage pipes of a plumbing system for the purpose of supplying or removing air to relieve pressures above or below atmospheric. A back vent is that part of a vent line which connects directly with an individual trap beneath or behind a fixture and extends to a branch or main soil or waste pipe at any point higher than the fixture or fixture trap it serves.

An air pipe in a plumbing system which admits air downstream of a water seal in a w.c., sink or washbasin, thus preventing the creation of a vacuum in the wake of water flushed down the drain and avoiding the breakage of the seal which such a vacuum could cause. Lorsqu'on a affaire, d'une part à une descente qui ne reçoit que des lavabos bidets, baignoires, éviers et autres appareils de même nature et d'autre part à une chute qui ne reçoit que des W.-C., on se contente de les ventiler chacune par le haut en les prolongeant hors combles dans le même diamètre : c'est ce qu'on appelle la ventilation primaire. Si l'on réunit descente et chute en une chute unique la norme fait obligation d'établir une ventilation spéciale pour tous les siphons des appareils autres que les W.-C. : c'est ce qu'on appelle la ventilation secondaire. Quand il y a plusieurs appareils les ventilations sont raccordées à un réseau dit réseau de ventilation secondaire.

Strictement parlant, les termes «ventilation secondaire», «dispositif de ventilation secondaire», «évent de siphonnement» ou «anti(-)siphonnage» doivent être considérés comme des génériques englobant la «colonne de ventilation secondaire», tuyau vertical repiqué sur la chute, et le «branchement de ventilation secondaire», tuyau horizontal légèrement incliné, repiqué sur la colonne de ventilation secondaire ou sur la chute.
